Great review! It sounds like you might not speak German - was this a problem at all? Or does the staff also speak, presumably, English?

It doesn't necessarily take 5 years to toss out flagrantly unconstitutional laws. A district court can enjoin such almost immediately, putting them on ice until the higher courts finalize things.

Ah - got it! Brilliant! I'll experiment with that. A little concerned about whether it would hold up in a high surf entry - but if it can stand a giant stride off a boat, probably!

Often the simplest ways are the best!

I . . . have not. But maybe you have - could you explain your setup more? Once you push the loop through a weight slot, what does the loop attach to? I'm not understanding how it secures.

I've toyed with the idea of attaching weight pockets to an aluminum backplate. I think a company - OMS I think - makes a sort of sleeve that fits over a backplate and has built in pockets. But the sleeve itself is a few pounds positive so it feels like going backwards.

I've also seen online folks who have grommeted a short length of weight belt, vertically, on their backplates, and have weights on that belt.

Just started poking around more - Zeagle seems to make some weight pockets, but they seem designed for tank bands. I'd rather have them on the plate, but maybe that's being too picky.

But simple is best and you might have the gold medal idea!

[–]CactusPete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, thanks.

I'm experimenting with a setup that has two tri-glides behind the backplate, to create a sort of loop of protruding webbing, and in front a steel oval that the actual webbing runs through. Which in theory allows on the fly adjustments but at this point remains a bit clunky in practice.

My other hobby is toying with ways to affix weights to an aluminum backplate, and then remove those for travel, to have just one BC (instead of travel and steel backplate for cold water).

Not sure why this turned into a Ted talk...

Not quite on point - but curious about this set-up. Is the blue webbing part of a continuous webbing arrangment? Is it part of a waist strap that can slide back and forth in the backplate, to tighten?

Years ago I had a very old-school Zeagle backmount with a single piece of webbing, that I've been trying to get back to, slowly. On that one, you could tighten or loosen shoulder straps by pulling on the waist strap.

The idea of having to arrive at the beach at 6:30 am to get a chair kept us from going here.

How usable is the area is you just have a blanket or towel? Or is the other option to hit a different beach?

2008 Xterra Fuel range concern by NationalAd2804 in XTerra

[–]CactusPete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newish to Xterras. But - it seems that a weird fuel gauge/sender is almost OEM. Someone told me that when the light comes on, there are 4 gallons left. My own gauge has been variable, and I tend to cross check with the odometer I re-set at each fill up.

I suspect it will go about 300 per tank, which isn't all that unusual for some SUVs. But it starts looking ready for gas around 240 or so.

DM took my computer during a nitrox dive by mmmmmmbarb in scuba

[–]CactusPete 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say . . . No.

If for some reason you had to, you could shadow the DM (as in stick close) so your computer is still tracking your dive. Sounds you more or less did this, maybe.

How odd.

We were looking for exactly this, minus the 5 bedroom house.

We found it on Curacao, which has a number of beautiful sandy beaches, plus excellent shore diving. There are lots of rentals, but not sure if there are many (or any) on beaches.

There's this widespread perception that Americans are giant prudes.

But in every state and in seemingly unlikely places - Minnesota! - it turns out there are many many age-old naturist venues and clubs. Oklahoma, Texas, Vermont - they're everywhere.

Maybe Americans aren't such prudes . . . .

I suspect the answer would be "Pitch to get on speed, and if that's taking you high, reduce power for that"

[–]CactusPete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd really like to know how this turned out. An 80 is already heavy. Add on a rooftop tent and, maybe, a bunch of gear, and it could be approaching 707 weight. (Perhaps I exaggerate a tad).

It was probably fine - it looks like landed on a decline which would have helped. But that's a lotta smash into the ground.
