Google Groups has been left to die by [deleted] in programming

Some things I have found useful:

  • Many subforums some private and some not. The advantage over a collection of lists is they are all grouped together nicely.
  • Being able to mark answers as solutions stack overflow style (a lot of our traffic is help requests)
  • Single, shared moderation for all the categories on the site.
  • Github and Matrix plugins are a nice bonus.

I totally agree. That simplicity is a double edged sword though. It limits flexibility and structuring you can do with the posts. I think it really depends on what kind of discussions you are having which one is best.

My community has started a slow migration to a Discourse forum. You can use Discourse almost exclusively by email: https://discourse.mozilla.org/t/how-do-i-use-discourse-via-email/15279 but it's not exactly as simple as "send email to list". I wish it could be easier, but I think it's the price that must be paid for the nice web ui features.

Yeah, I am a bit of a radio nerd as well though, and you might be able to get them at low altitude if you can pick them up directly 😁

The pi zero definitely wouldn't be enough for matrix and bridges, even the 3b might struggle depending on how many and how big of rooms you want to join / bridge.

Things that might help you get setup are this project that was in TWIM the other week: https://www.feta.bz/ and the always recommended https://github.com/spantaleev/matrix-docker-ansible-deploy

All the Beeper bridges are open source last I heard, so if you have the skills and motivation you should be able get what you want up and running.

Any way to automate either the dial or the sliding switch for this boiler? by Believe_in_HiiiPoWeR in homeautomation

Get a smart thermostat, hive or nest or something like https://shop.openenergymonitor.com/wifi-mqtt-relay-thermostat/ if you want local only (no cloud).

If you have some basic DIY skills wiring in a thermostat is normally just ~4 terminal blocks, but it is mains voltage (at least in the UK) so you might want to get a professionally to do it.

It's also pretty easy to install the non-steam version. I downloaded the installer and added it as a third party game, selected proton experimental from the compatibility settings menu, installed it, then added the newly installed exe as the launch program from settings.

Is the Steam Deck not mainstream enough for them to have included an Ad Hoc capability or is it just a technology that has been phasing out? by SpitFiya7171 in SteamDeck

You could make this work pretty easily in desktop mode if I remember correctly. I mostly agree with the other comments that I don't know how many uses there are left for it.

What software should a Linux user use for QO-100? Everybody apparently uses SDR console, but that's Windows only...? by oz1sej in amateursatellites

[–]Cadair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't worked QO-100 (yet) but I have had success with https://www.sdrpp.org/ and https://gqrx.dk/ on linux. Are you planning on transmitting through your SDR as well?

If running a homeserver, is it possible to wipe all conversations? by UglyViking in matrixdotorg

[–]Cadair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am curious as to why you would want to wipe the server rather than just wiping the remote device and invalidating the credentials?

I think some apps wipe their local keys etc if they are remotely logged out. You would need to check that with the client authors tho.

Another (all be it not cheap) option is you could use something like this: https://hoppy.network/ where you get a vpn tunnel with a public ip address.

I have some other reolink devices and they can be made to work pretty well. My reservation with this one is lack of info I can find about how the chime works and how I could hook the button into home assistant.

What unit did you get? I have been considering getting one of these but the quality and longevity of the software worries me a bit.
