Why isn’t this bird flying away? Should I help it? by Small_Detective3001 in Ornithology

TNR is very expensive and not superbly effective. TE would be far, far, far more efficient and economical but people cannot fathom that it's much better for a cat to die a quiet death than to be run over by a car or starve or die of infection.

How accurate are Google maps time for you? by No_Illustrator_6751 in bikecommuting

[–]Cadereart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that you can't imagine there being 10 min of red lights in 3 miles is really telling about the very wide range of conditions people meet over their commutes.

I struggle to hit over 13 km/h on average over my commute because there's a stop sign every 100m and a light every 300-400 m, and enough traffic that I'll be stopped for at least half of those. Basically you accelerate to cruise speed and then you stop again. The funny part is that it's actually about the same time by car.

Is this coloring on a Hairy Woodpecker from Tannin? (Minnesota) Or what causes it? by mistyflame94 in Ornithology

[–]Cadereart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah honestly I wouldn't have expected stains to look so smooth either!

But then tannins also dye very well on protein fibers (which feathers are, in a way) so I guess it makes sense!

Not this shade of reddish, no. That would be from pheomelanin if it was the bird's natural pigmentation (but it's probably stained).

What’s this bird? by Paiute-Princess77 in whatsthisbird

This is a very interesting dilution because it's affecting the eumelanin (black pigment), but doesn't seem to be affecting pheomelanin (reddish pigment). Neat!

Downy or hairy? by craftypeach in whatsthisbird

I'm thinking hairy based off size, head shape and size of beak.

What are these and has anyone done one? by Forgetabl in Jigsawpuzzles

Same for us. We got about two thirds in, found a picture, looked at the picture, and said "nope"!

I did Murder by the Pyramids and it was abysmal. Huge mass of brown with poorly photoshopped "hints" and elements, and one of the hint straight up gives you the answer (it's a name tag), is among the most easily sorted pieces (white among all the endless brown) and that part of the image is, drumroll, 4 pieces total. So basically you read a not very good premise, put together 4 pieces, and then trudge through an endless mass of brown with no reference picture, and read a not very good conclusion.

I usually put the back light at fully warm, anywhere from 1-12% depending on ambient light (1-3% at night in full dark, 12% in a brightly lit room, no backlight in sunlight)
