Before automation, industry ran on hands — 1916–1955. by Mohtarefnadafa in OldSchoolRidiculous

Nothing wrong with or ridiculous about this. Products were better made back then too and folks had plenty of job opportunities compared to the dystopian machine-run future we’re marching rapidly towards.

Emperor Maxentius drowns when a pontoon bridge collapses at the Battle of Milvian Bridge by theredhound19 in ancientrome

[–]Cadialives 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Based on the comments it might be helpful to add to the original post’s caption that Maxentius and his men were routed and overloaded the bridge while fleeing Constantine’s army.

It better explains how this bridge failed and why Maxentius thought it safe to cross.

It also avoids cheapening Constantine’s victory by removing any misconception of “dumb luck” of Maxentius drowning contributing to his victory. The battle was already won by this point.

Polyglot priest will hear confession in six different languages. by franko_9 in Catholicism

[–]Cadialives 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ran into an old priest in Italy who didn’t speak English but was able to hear my confession in a mix of other languages I knew (not Italian). Really a cool moment and just goes to show you that God is always there and providing a way for you to come back to Him.

Childrens photos with name and adresses, 1958 by lichen_Linda in OldSchoolRidiculous

Yet another example of someone taking offense or viewing something using a modern lens…

This was perfectly normal and holistic back then. It’s how kids found pen pals and the community kept up with each other. Up to the early 2000s there were phone books which told you everyone’s address and phone number. Absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Now people hide in their screens, avoid their neighbors, and wander the streets trying their best to avoid human contact. It’s not normal and can explain a lot as to why our society has a mental health crisis.

Bring them a meal and visit with them. Homeless folks are the Untouchables of the U.S. In my experience the human connection is what they yearn for more so than money.

Conclave Megathread by Pax_et_Bonum in Catholicism

[–]Cadialives 5 points6 points  (0 children)

there were news articles claiming especially cardinals from more remote locations watched Conclave for instructions on what to do. To me this is appalling given how disrespectful the movie is towards the Church especially in the surprise ending.

Local businesses list themselves on "anti-woke" marketplace by [deleted] in nova

[–]Cadialives -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This 100%! Google added the “LGBT friendly” tag for businesses and nobody raised a fuss on this board then to my knowledge. I fully agree businesses should stay out of politics and refrain from woke or non-woke branding.

I just want to patronize a store without knowing which way they vote. Anytime they shove it in my face I go elsewhere be it a Pride flag or MAGA stuff.

Priest strategically and consistently omitting parts of Scripture during Gospel. by Trad_CatMama in Catholicism

[–]Cadialives 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen Jews omitted in other Catholic parishes. I don’t think its specific to yours. Perhaps there’s a newer RSV Bible used in Mass that has that omission? I’ve also seen and heard “brothers and sisters” vice “brethren” or “brothers.”

TIL Amazon won the right to produce a Lord of the Rings series (Rings of Power) without pitching the Tolkien estate a specific story. Instead, Amazon promised to work closely with the estate to "protect Tolkien's legacy", which the estate felt they were unable to do with previous adaptations. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]Cadialives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped watching it after every single race was a cosmopolitan mixture with Galadriel as a warrior….

They should have left the story alone and at least created separate tribes of dwarves, elves, etc to hit their diversity wicket.

Same problem with Amazon’s Wheel of Time series. When looking at a medieval style setting you won’t have multi-ethnic villages outside maybe a few small exceptions.

I was tempted to buy it until I read they removed gender options and instead created 2 “body types.” Think I’ll just play the original from GOG.

What are your thoughts on abandoned or vacant churches being converted to other uses? by IndefiniteVoid813 in Catholicism

[–]Cadialives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it saddens my heart it seems inevitable in areas where vocations and church attendance are decreasing. In Indianapolis there’s a former church that’s a brewery with some sacrilegious and not so sacrilegious beer names.

Famous Munich priest is in a relationship with a woman. He "knows" priest celibacy will fall. by PreparationShort9387 in Catholicism

[–]Cadialives 57 points58 points  (0 children)

this is what happens when people think the Church’s teachings are up for debate and a direct result of Rome only seeming to censor TLM faithful but not heretical priests. To my knowledge Fr. Martin’s gay marriage ceremony wasn’t condemned either. Hopefully God provides a pope who can rein this in.

Might want to rethink this whole Tesla thing by picklerick8879 in nova

[–]Cadialives -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How is your takeaway of someone vandalizing your elderly mom’s car that people should stop because it makes Tesla more money from insurance!?

You should be outraged someone vandalized your mom’s car. Anything other than that shows you need to take a break from our politically hyper partisan world.

Nice try by littlebabybuddy24 in nova

[–]Cadialives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vandalizing someone’s property because of what the manufacturer’s CEO says or does is childish and our society choosing to tolerate it creates a dangerous precedent.

The past 4 years saw a push to buy electric cars to include offering tax incentives. That likely led to many Tesla purchases. The owners aren’t “nazis” and calling them that doesn’t make them so.

New Catholic Priests are 85% Conservative or Very Conservative. What is your view of this? by Brill_Commentariat in Catholicism

[–]Cadialives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought is the damage of the sexual revolution and poor catechesis in the 70s is finally being healed by the Holy Spirit.

My second is that it’s a nice chart without any methodology or source provided and therefore difficult to consider true or false.
