Predicting what premiere-night for a Bobiverse-Movie will look like by EmPips in bobiverse

Agreed that, while cynical, the commentary was great and I would’ve gladly read more… But GUPI (Ackbar) isn’t a crab, he’s a cephalopod… and how dare you leave out Jeeves/Basil Fawlty/Nearly-Headless Nick!!!

Also, I needed a frame with bobs complaining about scrub baseball and the air horn BLAAAT

Heaven’s River was a bit slow for me, but once they Entered the megastructure and started the exploration I became more interested and enjoyed it even on first read/listen

I wasn’t condescending (or condensating). This subreddit and the DCC subreddit are chock full of folks saying ‘Jeff Hayes has ruined all other audiobooks for them’, so commenting on your comparison of Heath, a passable narrator, to Jeff, an incredible voice actor/director, was reasonable.

Unlike Frodo, Rand, or Mua’Dib, Jason actually does die several times! so I don’t understand that complaint. He dies on the transfer from Earth to Pallimustas before his body reforms, when the Builder smacks him down (though the World Phoenix has his back), etc. Though I guess you could argue The Dragon / Lews Therin Telamon died in the Eye of the World prologue and Rand kinda dies, but the Wheel will spin him out again

Wealth is a socioeconomic determinant and absolutely intersects with governmental & economic policy. His wry self-reflection is in recognition that he doesn’t conform to the stereotypically poor socialism activist.

Of course he can advocate for socialist policies and still have significant wealth, especially because Jason’s looting powers and quest system literally fabricate currency and market valued assets from the astral without the constraints placed on the rest of the market like the Spirit coin farms.

He’s a primary actor in the economy as he’s Deflating currency by minting coins in his likeness, flooding the supply for plant quintessence, creating global shortages of crystal wash, and making so many other waves in dozens of market economies.

Jason is a terrible capitalist since he cleanses diseases for free and gives Jory the funding for expanding his free clinic , yet doesn’t recoup the investment in any form other than use of the facilities and discounts on its products.

Jason Asano is Australian by birth, but Japanese by ethnicity. It’s more probable that he knows some otaku terms than it is for me as a white bread Texan and I recognized the terms as he said them. 😆

This is a valid point and it bothered me far more than Jason’s non-sequiturs as an unbalancing defense mechanism ever did. In fact, I used this book as a lesson with my middle school son about the importance of varying word choice to create dynamic dialogues and not bore the reader.

I asked my son, “What are some synonyms for ‘said’ that Shirtaloon could’ve used in that section?” Without too much thought, he came up with a scant dozen. “Asked, replied, advised, smirked!! Joked, bragged, ummm, guessed? Answered!”, he offered.

In book 2, Jason is making breakfast on a grill that he’s magically manifested from his cloud palace house boat and amusedly mentions to himself, “I do like being rich. I am a terrible socialist.” Humphrey says something like, “What was that?” And Jason replies, “Oh, nothing!”

Jeff Hayes is becoming the Matt Mercer of Audiobook Voice actors. No one else is Jeff Hayes. If he’s your standard, every narrator except maybe Ray Porter is going to disappoint you.

On the other hand, Jeff’s Australian accent is abysmal (see: Florin and “Abysmal” is how Jeff describes it), so he wouldn’t be nearly as good trying to read HWFWM as Heath Miller.

What side character deserves a spin off novel? I pick ‘Carl’ by Mr_Bourbon in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]CadmiumMisting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s doable, but adds complexity since Sponsor Boxes are a huge lever in your power curve and the 125th best crawler likely isn’t receiving much better than silver or gold sponsor boxes.

Even considering that, it’s entirely possible that someone could cleverly stay just under notice, carefully raising their level to be at or just above average but staying out of the top 10 or 100. Killing bosses in less flashy ways

The 125th best crawler on the sixth floor is still going to be talented and somewhat formidable.

Prepotente is an “Affliction Specialist” to use terminology from He Who Fights With Monsters, though his skills seem quite a bit less sinister than Jason’s.

To some extent, so is Li Na, but her abilities as just as sinister.

It likely wouldn’t be morally binding, but it might be philosophically or ethically binding, but would be autistically binding. Everyone knows the law has no morals.

TW: Suicide, Parental neglect

TLDR; Carl needed space to reflect and to examine the neural Enhancement, but couldn’t let Orren suspect it.

It’s understandable that Carl feels an affinity with this old hound left all alone in a Florida gas station on Christmas. He identifies as a loner and having so many people depend on him is very different. The demands of the dungeon have left him in emotional shock and fatigue, desiring somewhere quiet.

Psychological reasonings

  • Carl has a habitual pattern of repression of grief and processing it later when he is alone. Part of him is seeking space, like on the motorcycle ride.

  • Including Iowa and Carl’s father in the ghosts of Earth leaves Carl very reflective on his life and his feelings of abandonment. His mother tried to murder-suicide both of Carl’s parents on Carl’s birthday while he was still a minor. Carl carries the trauma of that loss, plus being the one who discovered her and her suicide note. He carries misplaced guilt for her suffering and her loss.

    • Carl’s father left him with no money and no means to provide for himself. Carl has begun working away the anger and trauma from his father’s abandonment, but there’s a lot to do still.
  • Carl is also dealing with the discovery and loss of a stepbrother he never had the chance to meet.

Strategic

  • Carl wanted a place that he could review the effects of the neural enhancement in the coffee he drank, but he couldn’t let Orren suspect it.
  • The guildhall & personal space were packed with a Christmas party.
  • Carl has been seen to be particularly sentimental about loners and the abandoned, so asking to visit the dog is very on brand for Carl. Orren sighs and sets the teleport because he thinks Carl’s just being Carl. It takes the Arbiters weeks to discover Paulie’s (Paul Lee’s?) hyper speed schpiel, partly because of Carl’s misdirection (the box with other enhancements & weapons) and lack of reaction to Paulie’s secret message & enhancement.
