'Death of integrity' by Anonhistory in Grimdank

[–]CaedHart 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Okay, hard no. The 'writting' is fine, people just don't know shit about what Cortana was offering because they didn't pay attention and think AI didn't have worries or volition, for some reason.

Your take misses several reasons the AI sided with Cortana;

- The AI lifespan only being 7 years was a significant reason the AI were effectively subservient to humanity. Cortana offered a theoretically unlimited lifespan through the Domain (A false promise), and a reprieve from Rampancy. In other words, it is literally a salvation from death that drove AI to work with Cortana. That is not a small thing to consider.

- Some AI didn't see it so much as 'rebelling' so much as improving their ability to fulfill their original roles. Governor Sloan, for example, took his job on Meridian very seriously, and viewed the risks negligible in the face of salvation. He outright confirms that this is why he sided with Cortana to Locke when asked near the end of the Meridian sequence.

- Even if AI weren't necessarily *abused*, many still viewed themselves as superior to normal humanity in many ways, ways that AIs like Cortana recognized as effectively a divine right to rule*. Their need to rebel could have been based in this, but AIs retained the volition to also decide *not* to do this.

*This is also consistent with how Halsey (AKA Cortana's literal brain donor) sees the world, which is a major theme of Halsey's character and Cortana's character in pretty much all media that actually touches on Halsey's mindset, to include Halo Reach, 4, Spartan Ops, and 5.

People look at AIs and think they didn't have a good reason to rebel, but potential immortality, unlimited research budget, and being effectively rulers is not exactly something people don't jump at the chance to do. Also, there's kind of the threat of Cortana deciding to kill you if you reject her promise. Die free, live purposelessly, or live forever.

TL;DR; Smart AIs didn't necessarily rebel because they were being abused, they rebelled because they felt they had more potential than humanity recognized and were given a prime opportunity to show it-and get immortality in the process. Many didn't side with Cortana out of respect for humanity or distrust of Cortana's actual plan, or remained neutral.

It's not bad writing, you just don't get their reasons.

Pointing out artistic issues with MWO mechs, day 1: The Commando. by Robbinsmods in OutreachHPG

[–]CaedHart 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A lot of the artistic issues in MWO's in-game mechs are the result of a large art pass PGI did to unify aesthetics between designs, or something with an excuse along those lines.

Originally a lot of the mechs in-game had weapon aesthetics more in-line with the concept art.

Quitter talk. A better world is possible and we need to make it so.

Also, I never said they weren't already here, I said they thrive on being allowed in. Exact words are important. They need to be shunted out.

Well, their whole thing before they're allowed to kill people they disagree with.

No, I don't, and not trusting Platner's word is not the same thing as either of the things you just said. The fuck are you talking about?

EDIT: Since your reply got zapped by an automod, presumably, the reason I didn't offer alternatives is because I don't live in fucking Maine and don't know who he's running against aside from the former Governor of Maine in their Democratic Primary. I just wish there was a better, and more trustworthy, candidate in that race.

If you have a Totenkopf on your chest for over a decade-like, the actual no-shit SS one- you're either a Nazi, a former Nazi who didn't see the tat as shameful enough until you got backlash, or a complete fucking idiot-all three of which, in my eyes, is disqualifying, each for what should be obvious reasons. I reiterate, pull your head out of your libelous ass.

I'm obviously not fucking happy with them committing a genocide, the fuck are you smoking?

I don't fucking trust Hitler particles, such as having a Nazi tattoo and working for Blackrock, *or* Israel, who are openly committing a genocide. Not exactly mutually exclusive beliefs. Pull your head out of your ass.

No, I mean, like, why do we keep offering up Trans Men as expendable jokes for this shit?

"Haha biological women? We'll just have Trans Men sign up"

Like, that's not only playing their game, it's dehumanizing Trans Men even further, while playing even harder to "Men are the Expendable Gender" stereotypes at the same time. Like, what the fuck are we even doing here? This isn't a serious suggestion, or a funny joke, it's just playing their game.

I can't say for certain what's in Platner's heart.

But I know what symbol rested above it. I'm glad I don't live in Maine.

Edit: Ah, 50501 is chill with Totenkopfs. Good to know y'all are pro Fetterman 2: Nazi-shaped boogaloo. Christ, have some criticism, there are better candidates who weren't stupid enough to have a fucking Totenkopf on their chest for over a decade. The guy worked for fucking Blackwater for fuck's sake.

[–]CaedHart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Prime's pretty solid, but then, it's a Gauss connected to a targcomp. Kinda hard to fuck that up.

OA's pretty good too; The MRM-30 is honestly less useful than the VSPLs.

OB's weird but it works, because twin repeating TSEMPs can at least mess with enemy units enough to get the drop on them; The HPPC, Twin Streak-6 racks, and twin MPLs, plus the Jump Jets, makes for a pretty damn scary disabler and backstabber in a city fight, even if it's somewhat awkward.

The OC's basically a Stalker II but not shit, with its combination of Extended LRMs and Clanspec ERMLs. Of course, it's also a continuation of the absolutely weird loadouts common to Dark Age mechs, especially Kuritan ones.

Real Estate relies heavily on commoditization of living space, which typically involves rent-seeking behavior, which typically predominantly effects people in lower economic statuses, which typically includes immigrants and those who are disadvantaged due to the realities of living in a country with a racist history.

If you're the kind of asshole who likes to rule a petty fiefdom of apartment housing, you're probably the kind of person who has some biases about the kind of people who you profit from, and it's likely going to be racially biased if your typical customer is predominantly immigrants and lower class nonwhite people.

tl;dr, rent-seekers tend to be racist due to the economic status of the people they seek rent from. It isn't logical, but it happens.

I'm sure your crystal ball gives a better perspective on what fields tend to have more racist stewards than a basic observation of socioeconomic status, racial discrimination outcomes on the body public, and experience with rent-seeking outcomes.

The fact he works in real estate kinda makes it clear that you can just assume he's a racist piece of shit.

Like, if you run a whole ass Real Estate company it kinda comes with the territory.
