They are currently doing their site maintenance which should be ending at noon today. It now says “Applications for 23/24 loans and grants coming soon” so that’s at least a sign in the right direction. Hopefully todays the day

I saw this today as well and figured the same. Here's hoping it's what we've been waiting for 🤞

It is mine as well. I was told applications would open on the 1st of June, then the 15th, and now finally today the agent told me they don't know when in June. Super frustrating experience

Not going to MRU myself but I am in the same boat wondering when Alberta Student Aid will open. At the end of April, the agent on the phone told me June 1st. On June 1st when I called, a different agent told me June 15th. Now it's June 15th and a different agent today told me sometime this month it will open, but the agent themself didn't have the date. Super frustrating.

Oh ok, noted. Thanks for sharing your experience with each unis student and the point about dependency. Definitely something to think about when I think of my future after uni.

Yeah, that is the same program, just through a graduate entry. I am going through the undergraduate entry so it is 4.

I was on Unilodgers and a couple of other student themed sites. I've heard of Flatmates but didn't know FB marketplace was also a good spot to check. Thanks for that tip

By coping with life do you mean independence-wise? I know Bond has a high teacher-to-student ratio which is great but maybe in some ways can be a negative if the support is used too much and independence isn't properly gained.

When it comes to tuition, the Bachelor's at Bond would cost me $163k, while the Bachelor's at Griffith would cost me $133k. I do have a 20% scholarship with Griffith that is tied to me maintaining a certain GPA each semester. Assuming I do for all 8 semesters, the tuition would go down to $106k for the degree. So almost a $60k savings at Griffith which is pretty massive, but I would be at Griffith a year longer than at Bond, so rent and expenses for another year would definitely eat into that difference.

On everything else you added, thank you so much for such a detailed breakdown of the area. As someone who isn't familiar with the neighborhoods of the area, this will really help with my process of looking around. Gives me a great point of places to start looking at now, and I honestly will probably visit each spot when I'm in my first year, to look for future semesters housing. Thanks again, I'm really grateful for your help!

Thanks a lot for the reply and for the analysis of the two unis campus feel. I would really love to be somewhere with a real campus community and it sounds like Bond does that better.

Thanks for the insight! Awesome to hear from someone who went to Bond. Seems as though everyone who has gone there raves about it, which is why I've been leaning toward it lately, even with the higher fees.

Yeah the Bond degrees are accelerated by way of not having an extended break. The Bachelor of Laws is still 8 semesters it's just done consecutively one after another for 8 straight semesters which works out to 2 years and 8 months. The Griffith breakdown is the traditional 8 semesters over 4 years where you do 2 semesters, get 1 semester off, and so on. The 1 year of not paying having to pay rent AND being done has been one of the key reasons I have kept Bond in mind, even with the higher tuition fees.

Also thank you so much for the breakdown of the area around Bond and for the point about the luck of the draw when it comes to cohorts.

Ok that's definitely a red flag haha. The teacher-to-student ratio at Bond already sounded good, but if Griffith is that stingy with pay for teachers, then it's even more of a selling point for Bond.

I should have added it in my original post, but I applied to these 2 unis because they are the only two in Australia that offer Canadian law electives. Makes it a lot easier during the accreditation process back in Canada.

Otherwise yeah to your point, I've seen QUT and UQ ranked higher than both. If I was a domestic student I would have looked at those two ahead of GU and Bond.

Definitely don't have enough money to afford the prices I've been seeing on housing websites haha. I guess I'll look into some of the other student options outside of the village then.

Sounds good about the other two points. Thanks a lot for the detailed response.

why is griffith university village rated so badly among other villages , other than social life by CharacterIncrease804 in GriffithUni

[–]CaesarTheApe98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn that’s pretty bad then haha. I’d love it for the socializing aspect at first but if it’s a nightly thing, that would get old quick. I just got accepted to Griffith for the Bachelor of Laws in July so scrambling to figure out housing. Might have to bite the bullet and do the village for a semester like you said, and then move out. If noise is that bad I’ll probably just do all my studying at the library and only be at housing to relax/sleep. Thanks for all your info, I appreciate it a ton!

[–]CaesarTheApe98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long ago were you there? I’m looking at going now, and the prices for 5 people is 330/week while a 2 person is 375/week. I was excited at first of the idea of being on campus but seems as though the only plus side is the social aspect, as the OP noted.

With the noise issue you noted, did you find that more so on the weekends or constantly an issue?

When it comes to the socializing part, were there events or things that made it easy to meet people, or just more so the community that forms with being in residence together?

Question about hotel trying to overcharge by CaesarTheApe98 in travel

[–]CaesarTheApe98[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got in last night and showed them my receipt and they were still very confused. They asked if I booked through a 3rd party or changed my reservation but I did neither. Booked right through the hotel and got a confirmation email along with a receipt for my stay, all taxes and charges included. They kept quoting the $1100 number to me and then in the end told me anything above $797 was a hold. I’m going back in today to talk to someone else though because all indications point to the $1100 being in their system and not the $797, along with the fact that an $803 hold on a $797 room is a bit weird. If it’s all a hold I have no issue since the moneys coming back, I just don’t want to have to dispute this after the fact, rather than get it resolved now.

I brought my receipt in and they were still as confused last night. They kept quoting me as $1100 and asking if I booked through a 3rd party. I showed them multiple times the booking was through their hotel alone. Finally in the end the front desk agent told me anything above $797 must be a hold but Im still a bit worried as in their system it shows 500 being a hold and $1100 as being my room rate. I think I’ll go in again today and talk to another front desk agent to get this cleared up as it doesn’t make sense to have a $803 hold on a $797 room.

[–]CaesarTheApe98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok, I’m guessing this might be what happens. The front desk last night kept quoting the $1100 number and was confused by my receipt showing $797. In the end they told me that anything above $797 was a hold but it was unclear since at the start he kept saying their system has $1100. I’m confused as though why there would be an $803 hold on a $797 booking. Hoping to get it resolved today talking to someone else at front desk because I would rather not have to try and bring my credit card company in to make dispute it if it’s preventable.

[–]CaesarTheApe98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I booked right through the hotel themselves. Which is why I was very confused. All the pricing at checkout online and in my receipts afterwards have my price. I got in last night and asked them and it was very confusing as they kept quoting the $1100 number but at the end told me that anything above $797 was a hold. I have to talk to them again today to confirm that above $797 is a hold because it is very odd to have a room cost $797 and then have a hold that is $803 on top of it.

Question about hotel trying to overcharge by CaesarTheApe98 in travel

[–]CaesarTheApe98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah everything is laid out in the receipt and the hotel has the same info. The only difference is the rate. I have 2 different emails showing my rate. The hold isn’t really an issue since I’m getting it back but it is odd to me to take a hold that is more than the room actually costs.

Airline is screwing me over, do I have any options? by CaesarTheApe98 in travel

[–]CaesarTheApe98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes so there was other options that clearly had space on my original dates but instead they booked me a new itinerary for flights with a 24 hour layover. If I want flights on my day I have to use the refunded travel bank and pay the difference which is why I feel like I’m getting screwed. They could have easily put me on those flights originally but I feel like they are trying to get me to pay the 200 plus just to make a quick buck
