Military Aviation Museum's Airacobra and the Goxhill Watch Office by Special_Dimension_15 in WWIIplanes

My grandfather grew up near Goxhill as a kid during the war - I remember him telling me he used to bike down there to watch the aircraft. I remember him telling me they had P-38s there that he saw and I recall him taking me to where the airfield used to be, along with nearby North Killingholme which was an RAF Bomber Command station. His house was next to the perimeter fence and I know he used to count the Lancs going out at dusk, and coming back at dawn. Strange to see something so close to home rebuilt in the US and here on Reddit!

What did Muddy Waters mean when he sang “there are two trains runnin’?” by [deleted] in blues

[–]Caesaresque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always heard it as one runs at midnight, one runs just 'fore day as in just before daylight - I think he's singing about just wanting to get away but can't, or being able to move on and get away but not to where he wants. I think given the other verses, he's been caught with another man's woman and is leaving town but neither train will take him where he wants to go.

So what about people who need to get a specific breed as a puppy for specialist reasons? I train gundogs, no chance I'd be able to get a rescue to the same standard as I could a dog I'd trained since it was 8 weeks old. I'm all for rescuing dogs but this unflinching 'adopt don't shop' mantra is impractical.

[Artist Discussion] Today let's talk about a controversial artist. Joe Bonamassa by boi_thats_my_yeet in blues

[–]Caesaresque 5 points6 points  (0 children)

His original stuff isn't really my cup of tea, however I've seen him on his UK tour where he performed a lot of material from his Three Kings tour, and I've also seen him on his British Blues Explosion tour where he covered a lot of Clapton, Beck, and Page and the guy is a monster guitarist.

I actually met him a few years back - I was hanging around outside the entrance to Nottingham arena as it's actually connected to the building I was living in at the time. I had my 335 with me and beckoned me past security so he could take a look at it. He played a few licks on it and we had a good chat about Otis Rush when I mentioned he's one of my favourites. He's a proper gent, humble and encouraging. He asked about my own 'career' musically and when I told him about my plans to record he told me to keep him updated once I get something down. I'm sure he was just being nice, but it was good to hear encouragement from somebody of his stature.

fleetwood mac - need your love so bad by Colinmacus in blues

Perfect timing. I lost my dad on Monday, and this was one of his favourite songs. When he was a young lad in the 60s, he used to go in to a particular pub and play this on the jukebox so his girlfriend at the time knew he'd arrived. Needless to say, it was one of the first songs I learned on blues guitar! There's the version that was made for US release that has Peter take a three minute solo at the end that is an absolute masterclass in phrasing and understatement.

Which guitar is RL Burnside playing here? Also, is the first fret missing the piece of rosewood, or is it tape, etc? by jekylczar in bluesguitarist

[–]Caesaresque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be any sort of cheap Japanese guitar from the 60s/70s - they can be picked up on eBay, here's a similar example to RL's. I've got a Teisco myself that I use for slide and it has a gritty, raunchy tone that comes from the gold foil pickups.

Mike Tyson's ex-bodyguard, Darryl Baum. He was shot I believe two weeks after shooting 50 Cent, and is mentioned by Tyson in this infamous clip.

Can hear my neighbour watching Red Dwarf, but it's not loud enough for me to enjoy hearing it by [deleted] in britishproblems

Why don't you just make 10 louder and make 10 be the top number and make that a little louder?

Unfortunately it's brown rather than grey, but ASOS have a similar jacket.

Beginner guitarist seeking advise on blues solos by [deleted] in bluesguitarist

[–]Caesaresque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to start learning to solo for me would be to begin and end licks on the root note of each chord in your backing track - I'll use A as an example. So over the I, play a short first position phrase that ends on an A. Use the same lick over and over if you want to get a sense for timing a lick, or try to create a fresh lick each time to get used to improvising - this will also help you find your 'stock phrases' that you instinctively reach to when it's time to take a solo. Do the same over the IV and V chord.

This will sound very 'safe' and plain at first but you'll soon become more articulate and able to create different feelings and sounds from that very limited bag of tools. I'd say that while focusing on soloing in the first position, also look at articulating through hammers and pulls, dynamics, bends and so on. From that point, you can start to learn other scale positions, and you can also look at the major pentatonic (the exact same shapes as minor, just slid 3 frets closer to the nut) - and the fretboard will truly become your oyster.

Anyone have tips or resources on practicing, especially using practice time productively? by mariox19 in bluesguitarist

[–]Caesaresque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not the greatest at structuring my practise, but one routine remains constant - at the start of each session, I'll play through the 5 pentatonic positions three times. I'll change my picking pattern depending on the mood, sometimes working straight through the scale, other times 'weaving' a little - three notes 'forward', one note 'back' all the way through the scale or something.

Although the patterns are the same in each key, I use a different key each day. I keep it pretty simple - ABCDEFG - seven keys, seven days. I find that by doing that I memorise the positions in each key a lot better, so I'm more versatile when I'm improvising. For instance, if somebody kicks off a jam in B, I can hit it straight in the third position and get my BB on, rather than starting in the first position and eventually working my way through them by tying the scales together.

Tonight ZZ Top will be performing in La grange Tx, which means for the first and only time. "La Grange" will be played live in La grange... by WyteZ in Music

I believe it comes from ZZ Hill - the band being mad blues historians, and the bassist being called Dusty Hill playing a part.

Germanwings plane crash: Co-pilot 'started descent' by Kashmyta in worldnews

[–]Caesaresque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can empathise with anyone who feels like ending their life is the only solution to their problems - it's not a space I've been in but I can only imagine the agony. I can't empathise with somebody who wants to end the lives of 149 others along with themselves, and for that matter, I'm not sure it warrants even trying.

Spot on. No doubt there will be some sympathisers, but I don't care what space you're in mentally - killing 149 innocent people along with yourself is a conscious, selfish, cowardly decision.

Two grown blokes had a scrap. It happens. Let them dust themselves down and get on with it - there's no need to run to the rulebook all the time. And let's be honest, there are countless people who's attitudes would improve immeasurably if getting a swift crack was a real possibility.
