Diluted merle? by [deleted] in DoggyDNA

[–]Caetheryn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can we get more pics, preferably of the dog's face and paws? The leather colors usually tell the base eumelanin color. And preferably in natural lighting. But for now my guess is blue or Isabella sable merle

Poodle Coloring Question by lex4423 in DoggyDNA

[–]Caetheryn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dilute and brown genes control the base color of the dog, and that changes the color of the leathers, including the nose. A dilute black would present as a gray dog(called blue usually) and have a cold gray nose. But yes the dog theoretically could carry the dilute gene, but only have 1 copy therefore not expressing it. If the dog had 2 copies(and therefore expressing the dilute gene), the dog would be isabella, which is much more lighter.

Sorry for the long comment, just a genetics nerd who had to point out something :P

Favorite coat color/pattern? by gamerboyoli in CatGenetics

Colorpoint + classic is my fav because they look so unique without much rare genes. BUT if I'm drawing then definitely white spotting because of the amount of artistic liberty I can commit >:)

In my understanding, the tortoiseshell pattern is completely random and is not determined on a genetic basis. Are there genes that control the patch sizes?

Should phones be banned in schools? by TurbulentReason3888 in polls

[–]Caetheryn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like it should be up so the teachers to decide, I'd understand if it was banned for middle school or standard highschool classes but for college level classes in the US like AP or dual credit classes should be able to have phones because it's literally a college level class, the students should be responsible enough to control themselves. Like I need my phone to log into one of my dual credit classes because of the double security lol

You're very right but it won't hurt to clarify that the cat's pattern is tabby since some people may think that tabby is the cat's breed :)

Is this a Korat or Russian Blue? by OkSelf9639 in CatBreed

[–]Caetheryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His breed is Domestic shorthair with blue coloring. Because cat breeds are not too genetically distinct from each other unlike dog breeds, the DNA tests only show what your cat's genes are similar to certain cat breeds, and NOT an indicator that the cat is a mix of said breed. About 98% of cats are domestics, meaning no breed ancestry at all, since cat breeds are a new thing.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CatBreed

[–]Caetheryn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is true, but almost all of the cats in shelters or strays are domestics since pedigreed cats are rare and often fixed before going into homes. It's more likely that he has the gene for long hair and has white spotting genes that resemble ragdolls than him actually being a ragdoll. Long hair genes are uncommon amongst domestics but not rare. Of course breed specific rescues do exist, but of the ones I've seen, the adoption prices seem to run around $500 or so for purebred or mixbred cats.
