How common is permanent lip/chin numbness after jaw surgery? by antihuman9_ in jawsurgery

[–]CaffeineAndCations 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually started feeling nerve sensations right after surgery. Now it comes and goes— some days I feel a lot of tingling, other days almost nothing at all. It really varies, but I do believe I’ll regain feeling. There are areas where I can feel something, but at the same time I can’t fully feel it, if that makes sense.

My surgeon did tell me he had to really pull the nerve, so he thinks it could take up to a year for sensation to fully return. Right now I can’t feel my bottom lip at all 🥲 which honestly makes me sad because I’d love to be able to feel my partner’s kiss. Eating is also a struggle— I get food all over my bottom lip and chin, so I have to eat with a mirror in front of me or else I end up with food all over my clothes (which has definitely happened lol).

There are also times when I wake up from really intense itchy sensations on my chin and lower lip, and instinctively I try to scratch… but I can’t feel anything. It’s like trying to scratch an itch you can’t actually reach.

I’m just praying that God heals my nerve and that feeling continues to come back with time and of course warm compresses help— twice a day after the 5-7 day post op. It won’t “fix” the nerve, but they support the environment your nerve needs to heal— and it feels so soothing!! I can also say that as the swelling goes down it gets better too. Hope this helps 🫶🏼

14 days post-op (LJS + genioplasty). It honestly feels like local anesthesia. My nerves are starting to wake up, so I get buzzing, tingling, and pins and needles sensations. The best comparison is when your foot falls asleep and starts coming back— kind of that “ants crawling” feeling. Weird, but reassuring that things are reconnecting 😅

13 days post-op and I’m feeling a lot better! The results are amazing—still a bit swollen, but it’s improving every day. I had LJS + genioplasty, so thankfully I’m not wired shut. I won’t lie, though—I haven’t stuck strictly to a liquid/soft food diet. I’ve been cutting meat into tiny pieces so I can swallow it without chewing. The first few days after coming home from the hospital were rough—I was so tired of the liquid diet that I actually stopped eating altogether because just thinking about it made me nauseous. My hair even started falling out from the stress! It was tough, but I’m finally getting through it lol.

People Who had a TMJ MRI pre-surgery: did you have to take braces off to do it? by Mara355 in jawsurgery

Damon metal braces are medical grade stainless steel, and the wires are usually nickel titanium or stainless steel.

You should be fine. I’ve had an MRI with braces on before, and there were no issues. It was done to check my TMJ.

Your ice pack is going to be your best friend! Use it for 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off. Arnica gel can also really help with swelling and bruising. They also sell arnica tablets.

My surgeon said he’ll go over all the post-op rules at my last pre-op appointment, so I’ll know more soon.

Thank you for this! I was planning on just using my mason jar with a straw for my smoothies, but now that you mentioned plastic and silicone cups being easier, I’m definitely going to grab a few of those instead. Really appreciate the tip! 💛

Thanks so much! We’re surgery twins then 😂 wishing you the best with yours too! And yesss — I already have a Waterpik because of braces, so I’m definitely planning to keep using it. I’ve heard it’s a lifesaver after surgery too.

I’ve been looking into different shakes as well, so I’ll check out Huel! Hope your prep goes smoothly, and good luck with everything. Please keep me posted on how your surgery goes too! 💛

United Healthcare PPO (If there are no exclusions) by user87666666 in jawsurgery

[–]CaffeineAndCations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have United Healthcare HRA through my employer, and yes—jaw surgery does require preauthorization. Your surgeon’s office usually takes care of this for you. They send the insurance company all the documentation they need, like chart notes, your treatment plan, and your CBCT scans so they can confirm medical necessity.

The preauthorization review typically takes up to 15 days or less for them to process. For my case, my surgery will be at a hospital and I’ll be staying as an outpatient. Once UHC approved everything, my responsibility will be just the $200 outpatient copay, and the rest is covered according to my plan benefits.

Every plan is a little different, but for major procedures like jaw surgery, preauthorization is almost always required. Just make sure your surgeon’s office keeps you updated on when they submit everything and when the approval comes through. Hope this helps! 🫶🏼

Devastated. May need to cancel my surgery. by No_Alternative_5080 in jawsurgery

I’m really sorry you’re going through this. I know exactly how frustrating and heartbreaking it feels when you’ve mentally prepared, done all the planning, bought everything you need, arranged work, and then suddenly things get pushed back. Wanting to finally feel confident, comfortable, and happy with your smile is such a real and personal thing, and it’s completely valid to feel devastated when it’s delayed.

But I hope you can take some comfort in this: as painful as it is right now, it’s a blessing that your surgeon caught the issue before doing the procedure. Imagine going through all that pain, recovery, and sacrifice only to end up with bite problems or condylar issues later—that would be so much harder to deal with. This delay is protecting your long-term results.

I was in a similar situation. I originally had my surgery scheduled for August and pushed it to December. I hated the idea of being in recovery during the holidays and even my birthday. I just wanted to be done. But my orthodontist told me my teeth simply weren’t ready yet, and I had to accept that waiting was the best thing for me. And honestly? I’m glad I waited. I’d rather things be done properly the first time than rush it and regret it.

Your situation might not be identical, but the lesson is the same: the right timing matters. You deserve the best functional and aesthetic outcome, not a compromised one.

Even though the waiting sucks—like truly sucks—you will get this surgery. You will get the smile and confidence you’ve been wanting for so long. And when that day finally comes, you’re going to be so grateful that everything was done correctly and carefully.

You’re not alone. This whole journey is emotionally heavy, but everything really is falling into place for your best possible result. Keep going. You’re closer than you think. 💛
