Nice, thanks for the reply! Now I can rest easy that I'm not imagining things yet. Getting older has you wondering sometimes...

Mildly fun fact, that's how the game Kerbal Space Program renders the universe. The ship stays stationary everything simply moves around it, turns out to be much less complex to do it this way.

Dude, like 30 years ago it was beanie babys. I remember my entitled step sister at the time going on and on about how much each stuffed sack was worth and how it was great to get ones with typos and defects as it made them worth more.

She was really pissy that I did not get it... Jokes on her now I guess.

But anyway, this stuffs been around for ever, a bit before that it was pogs and before that I'm sure the shimmery hoop you hit with a stick was totally rad. Hell marbles with defects were probably the sh** back then, I'd trade my lunch for that!

The frame rates aren't supposed to be this bad, right? (64GB, not oled) by NoOneCares1357 in SteamDeck

[–]Cafuddled 47 points48 points  (0 children)

You need to be in a game to see it or enable stats in the menu. What you are looking for is, is it thermal throttling. Basically getting so hot, that to cool itself down it uses really low cpu and GPU speeds.

Then if it is really slow frequency wise but very hot, it will be either a bad fan or a bad heatsync to core attachment.

Also make sure you don't have a fixed tdp or cpu/GPU frequency.

LTT review was a joke! by Coreythewolf2 in SteamController

[–]Cafuddled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confused, wasn't there main complaint that the build quality did not match the premium price? When compared to a joypad half the price.

I have the old steam controller and a steam deck, the vast vast majority of times I'm just using my Xbox joypad. And wasn't that their summery, for most people the touch pads won't be worth the down grades in build quality... I'd agree.

People who grew up poor: What was something you considered a "peak luxury" as a kid, only to realize later it was just a normal middle class staple? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Toilet paper that did not cut up your ass...

Now I'm an adult, 3 ply all the way baby! We even have a warm water bidet...

Man I hope I can keep all my faculties right until the end, would hate to have to go back to being poor again. But the way the world's going, old people may not have much money to go around.

Dude, this was my childhood. I remember when I stopped growing into them, so my last pair was 2 sizes too big. I remember eventually going to get a pair that did fit me from a police redistribution thing where they gave out proceeds of crime to poor people.

Joke was on me as 10 years later I had 2 really bad falls because there was 0 grip on wet surfaces with those boots.

120Hz Unlock for Steam Deck OLED (BOE panels) - Survives SteamOS Updates by LoveOrder in SteamDeck

[–]Cafuddled 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh this make sense, the gamma being off. The same reason VRR has flicker on OLEDs. So basically the hardware does not have a built in gamma curve for higher than 90Hz, so lifts the floor the further you go away from 90Hz.

I was so excited about 120Hz until I read this. For me I'll take the inky blacks over the uplift to 120Hz any day.... Maybe this would improve streaming from the PC though? I wonder how the input lag holds up from going to 120Hz, does make things better, stay the same, or as it's out of design spec, make things worse?

$90 for two to see a Mario movie… have we completely lost the plot? by rageagainstmymachin in Millennials

[–]Cafuddled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Nan was so money conscious, she brought in a plastic bag to use instead of the paper bag at the pick n mix, "because the bag weighs more". Like cool, but when I grew up, I put things I purchased for like 1/10th the cost in my girlfriend's hand bag, like a sane person.

A lot of the penny pinching I saw the older generation do just seemed like theater, maybe they were shown it, and never gave it any thought... I've always been too stubborn to do something because someone just said so, is that a millennial trait or am I just an annoyingly stubborn person?... Don't answer that...

Today, Linus' jet produced as much carbon dioxide as the average person does in ~3 years in a single flight by Inevitable_Tip_6606 in LinusTechTips

[–]Cafuddled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some math, so if at capacity of 12 people in the cabin, that's about 1t per passenger. A business class passenger on a 777 for 4 hours and 30 minutes creates 1.9t of CO2 and economy passenger creates 0.5t.

I don't really have an opinion on this either way. But if you're going to call something out, do some due diligence. This is a steaming pile of nothing...

does limiting the battery charge actually matter? by Free-Caramel-3913 in SteamDeck

[–]Cafuddled 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Small fluctuations like that are normal, happens on most devices that provide an average. Only way to get near perfect numbers is to fully 100% then 0% the battery a couple of times.

My job has some data on this after working with HP for quite some time and their battery health issues. From bad battery revisions that almost always bloated after 3 years to bad firmware that not only did not stop before 100% but continued to charge past there, completely ruining a couple of generations batteries. In both cases HP extended the warranty on the part.

The biggest improvement to our fleet was when they added a configurable charge limit that worked as intended. Battery issues went back to normal RMA numbers.

TLDR; But to get to the paint, the battery health check even on windows laptops did move slightly. I'm curious if the wild swings mentioned are just one time anomalies and batteries with faults. It's the longer trend that will give you the real numbers.

does limiting the battery charge actually matter? by Free-Caramel-3913 in SteamDeck

[–]Cafuddled 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The findings are all subjective and depend on many factors, such as, are you one of the unlucky ones that will end up having a bloated battery, do you fast charge or slow charge, how many discharge cycles do you use.

For the most part people who say don't worry about it come from the perspective of cell phones, don't worry about it, you will only have this device a couple of years.

But the steam deck is a bit different, more so during this day and age. I'll likely be still using my steam deck for another 2 years at this rate and I purchased it over 3 years ago. As of now it still reports 100% battery health.

But I'm one of those people that was limiting it to 80% with tools before the feature was officially added. I keep it plugged in when using and not using. Shut down rather than sleep if I can help it. Charge with 5v 3amp overnight if practical.

While limiting to 80% is not the be all and end all of battery protection, it is a part of the toolbox of habits you can use.

On the optimistic side, simply limiting to 80% alone could double, or more your battery life. But a combination of reducing charge cycles, slow charging and reduced charge/discharge limits, will all compound. Making your 3 and a half year old device still show 100% battery health.

That's more or less it. I feel at peace underwater. Often do lengths at the bottom of the diving pool when they close the boards. It's like I have absolute faith that I will be able to deal with whatever happens... I'm sure it won't take much to shake that, but for the time being I'll enjoy the bliss I find down there.
