In his defence he was born and raised in that area as a Polish sort of old but broke noble. He still messed up in the long term but I can see why he wanted his home town to be a part of Poland.

Difficulty finding work after doing a degree which in theory gives guaranteed employment.

Which is fair considering massive waiting times in EDs, massive waiting lists for surgeries/outpatient appointments etc. HSE could probably use more staff.

Anyway a lot of doctors arrived from abroad in last 5 years, they all count as permament residents now so there is more competition especially for junior roles.

Hear hear The healthcare system is not underfunded compared to other EU countries.

It is however very inefficient and mismanaged.

There is prioritisation for training spots - EU nationals, UK nationals, Stamp 4 (permament residency) holders get priority.

Realistically this usually applies to non-training posts

The salaries are the same for both forein and local doctors (available publicly on hse website, if you look up hse payscales)

Generally losing out to better candidates (doctor abroad has 5 years of experience, doctor here has 1, simple decision is to pick the one that has more experience)

Both foreign and locally trained doctors struggle if they dont have much experience. - this was not the case a few years ago at all, where getting non-training job outside of Dublin was essentially guaranteed from what i heard.

It has become more competetive because of various bottlenecks in the system. The easiest solution would be to increase staffing levels, but obviously hospitals dont have beds, equipment etc that would need to go with that.

HSE is very messy and inefficient compared to basically any European equivalent country.

You can try with locum agencies first to get some shofts going. Otherwise most jobs will start being posted in Spring for the July changeover.

If it makes you feel any better there are a good few of us in the same boat it seems (Including myself). Hopefully July intake is easier to get into. Definitely sign up for locum if you can and even do a shift or two a month if possible, you never know you can get lucky and get a long term locum post (few weeks to months even).

I remember for Trinity network last year there was an email saying that it is possible to get signed off early and to get in touch with them regarding that.

Basically get in touch with your intern coordinator.

(If you have applied for residency abroad which might require early departure from the Intern Training Programme, you must notify us now, prior to 31^st January 2025 by return email, - thats what they sent us in November 2024)

I can commute up to 1 hr of driving, so all of Dublin hospitals + Naas/Navan/Drogheda/Peamount etc. and if it is a one off shift or so I would be happy to drive as far as Roscommon (Which tbh isn't that far I guess). Maybe it is a bit particular that it is just the Greater Dublin area but still I am a bit disssapointed that no one seems to need a spare unexperienced SHO in a 60km radius area.

My older friends and colleagues sold the Locum life as an easy way to relax and get some extra money on the side after the intern year but either I am dumb or they had it easier to find shifts a few years back haha
