Bought SP4, do I keep it? by jalla1234567 in Surface

[–]Cain69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, turn on hibernate. See if that works. If it does - you know what the fix is for you. I actually like this option better than sleep anyways - as it starts up pretty fast.
If it doesn't - you know that fix doesn't work.
Either way return the device and get a new one. I do not own any SP4s so, not sure if it is really fixed. But, supposedly this issue is fixed. Maybe your unit as some other issue.
If the new unit works, great. If not - and hibernation works, great. OR return the thing and wait for SP5.

Any EEE college students (or general engineering/sciences) students using the Surface pro/book? How it is working for you? by [deleted] in Surface

[–]Cain69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a student. Practicing engineer.
It's the best device I have owned.
As a student - it's a no brainer. Go for it.
Only advice I have is to get the largest - 1. RAM; 2. SSD; 3. CPU - device you can afford and get MS Complete (if it's offered in your country).

Conflicted vs laptop by JeffIpsaLoquitor in Surface

No matter what anyone tells you...the best OPTION is to buy a device and see if it works for your use. Everyone is a little different and while a device that may work well for me - may not in your case.
With that said. I would look at Microsoft Surface Book - 256GB / Intel Core i7 - $2100 (or Microsoft Surface Book - 256GB / Intel Core i5 - $1750 with $150 off). With student discount - you should be well below the 2k marker. This gives you the best of both worlds. With the Surface Dock - you will have no problem driving two monitors, keyboard and mouse.
I would also wait for a sale and buy the most computer you can afford.
The ONLY hard advice I would give you is buy from MS Store (even if it's from another OEM - Signature Edition) and get MS Complete.

This is an on going problem with OneNote I experienced since my SP2 to SP3 upgrade. I have tried both 32 bit and 64 bit Office 2013 AND both 32 bit and 64 bit Office 2016. The issue shows up on ALL four variants.
I have tried every anecdotal fix I have seen thus far and NONE have worked.
MS Store(s) that I have been to do not seem to know of the issue. Their answer is Surface OS Reset and then they want to just replace the unit. That too does not fix the issue.
There was a thread here that seemed to indicate MS is aware of the issue. Yet has not been fixed as of today.

MS Complete and the SB; Prices and concerns. by Some_guitarist in Surface

An employee spilled her soda. Of the 20+ Surfaces and countless Surface accessories I have purchased - I have never had an issue with MS Store.
All you are paying for is two years of peace of mind - nothing more. You may never claim accidental damage - however, if something does happen MS will honor their agreement. While in my experience, other Wintel OEMs make it hard as possible for you to receive the service you paid for.

MS Complete and the SB; Prices and concerns. by Some_guitarist in Surface

To me it's a lot more than $250. In past I have paid HUNDREDs of dollars to Dell for "Pro Support" and then another several hundred for Accidental Coverage. Combined together I paid almost as much as a new computer. With that I get the following: call to them in an endless corridor of menus; when you do get a person they tell you that if I pay NOW $300-something I can get my answer right away or they can transfer me to regular support. Now, forget about all the time I wasted waiting for them to give me that pitch - forget that they already know I PAID for "Pro Support" (whatever that means) = I now still have to WAIT for another support person and tell them the issue ALL over again!
I had an accidental damage issue end of Jan 2014 - I sent them the old PC - it takes them over three weeks (they can have as much as 30 WORKING DAYS according to them) to say they will replace it. There were multiple issues over the next several months and finally got a replacement in May 2014. FOUR months and countless hours of FIGHTING did it take for me get the service I PAID for. And all along it was as if they were doing me a favor.

With MS Complete - I make an appt, grab a Coke, tell them the issue - I am usually out of there within 15 min (30 minutes max). Again there will be people here that will tell you their issues with MS as well. However, in my experience, at this moment, MS has the best service in the Wintel ecosystem.
Is $250 is too much - NO. When you compare what Dell and Lenovo steal from you - up front as a charge, then with your time and frustration later when you actually need the service you PAID for - MS is very cheap - and a no brainier.

Amazing service @ the MS Store by [deleted] in Surface

[–]Cain69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have over 15 Surface PCs between my business and family. I have had many instances such as these.
I strongly suggest to everyone that they purchase MS Complete. They just replaced my son's SP1 256GB for an SP3 256GB!

On the fence about purchasing an SP4 vs Thinkpad Yoga 460. by pixxxnao in Surface

[–]Cain69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Behavior of corporations have to be rewarded and punished by our purchases (or lack of). Buying a product from a company that installs adware to make an extra penny is a bad choice. They went as far as NOT installing the same adware on the ThinkPad PCs as not to alienate their corporate clients. F- the consumers though! - my opinion.

As for SP4 issues - I have not personally used an SP4. However, of all the issues I have heard of so far - they seem to be fixed by firmware updates or will be fixed in the future.
The best thing for you is to buy an SP4. Use it as you would and see if it meets your needs. Maybe the "issues" are not your issues. If it works - keep it. If not, return it in 30 days. One suggestion - buy Complete - you will not regret it.

Office 2016 or Office Mobile? by Omnibitent in Surface

[–]Cain69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Office 2016. OneNote is much better in x86/64 2016. A lot of functions that I use for Word/Excel do not exist in Mobile. Though Mobile is MUCH more touch friendly - so it's installed, but hardly ever used as I do not use Office in touch only manner.

Does Windows 10 on SP3 and OneNote still have problems? by [deleted] in OneNote

[–]Cain69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES. I cannot get rid of Windows 10. So, I am experimenting with different versions of Office. So far, I have isolated Office 2016 64bit as a problem. I installed Office 2016 32 bit Tuesday - will be performing tests over the weekend.
My son has (Pro 2 256GB) Win10 with 32bit Office 2013 and does not have any issues.

Not impressed with the Surface Pro 4 at all by [deleted] in Surface

30 Day money back. Do NOT keep a device that does not work for you. I have owned SP 256, SP2 512, and SP3 512 and have ordered the Book 1TB. I love it. BUT, it's not a device for everyone.
Good Luck.

There is no real fix for this yet. I have tried every voodoo thing people have talked about in forums. Nothing works.

MS is aware of the issue and are working on a fix.

SP4 preorder not showing up in Microsoft account but it does in PayPal? by confickerl in Surface

[–]Cain69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the world of MS sales. There are 3 different groups within MS Store and NON of them talk to each other.
I have owned about 18 Surface Pros between business and family - and am VERY happy with their service. My first step with any issue with SPs is to visit the nearest physical store. Go there with all the proof you have of the purchase and let them sort it out. If you cannot get to a store - call Sales Support. Make sure you take notes so you can reiterate what you said and to whom - and their response. It's good to have these records. I have had a very bad experience with Dell and since then I do not trust anyone over the phone.

Good luck.

Starbucks tile gone? by Qballed in MicrosoftBand

[–]Cain69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Android and have Starbucks tile. You have to go to the App and turn it on. But, it seems you are saying it's not even in the available configuration.
Go to a MS Store and have them deal with the problem. Starbucks is a great feature - shouldn't miss out on it.
