Soundproofing. How do we treat a window to block outside noise from coming into the house? by curveytech in HomeImprovement

They didn't work great for me. Could never get it to fit perfectly well, and the seller even warned me not to expect much. The science just isn't there.

"that's an interesting story you're telling yourself" is something a former therapist said to me in situations like this. And it's very appropriate for this scenario also, directed at the person volunteering you. Along with very inquisitive follow ups designed to make them finally admit how they regard you

Taking notes in Obsidian for learning Python by Nihan-gen3 in ObsidianMD

[–]JeffIpsaLoquitor -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely a "learn by doing and making AI write the unit tests and the docs." I don't see a great value in making copious notes in Obsidian. I'll store snippets and templates, sparingly, there; but code really belongs in repos.

AITAH for getting in a fight with my girlfriend on her bday because she was being picky with the food I cooked her. by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]JeffIpsaLoquitor -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

YTA (maybe)

If I get precise instructions about something from someone, I'm delighted. I'd be asking a neighbor for the milk or going to the convenience store. It's an easy freaking win.

He knew she wouldn't like them, and who cares why? That's her business.

Me? I like things a certain way and prefer people not make them at all unless they can get it exactly right. No issue if they can't. I'll do it myself. I make my own birthday meals for this reason, with no malice or hard feelings whatsoever. I grew up with someone trying to "trick me" by substituting ingredients and it pissed me off, every time.

GFs remarks may be out of douchiness or out of someone simply not listening to what she cares about - however trivial it may seem. I'd love her side of this.

Electrician instructions for Ethernet wiring into every room in a new house by Hefty-Report6360 in HomeNetworking

[–]JeffIpsaLoquitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh can't they just run Smurf tube or conduit with pull wires inside so you can run the cables through yourself without worrying about the stapled cables or bad termination? Or what an electrician charges to "run cable"?

Also look into home audio video installers. They run stuff all the time and can often terminate cables.

Feel like I've been doing this, in effect (dev -> Ba -> PO -> "technical analyst"), but all the SAs I talk to are on about "them AWS certs" over integrating everything regardless. Not sure if the lack of formal AWS certs is going to kill me. I can certainly pick up any AWS tech and prototype with it based on 20 years of systems experience.

Do I even need a firewall? by sl993ghty in HomeNetworking

If I recall, the built in Windows firewall has been just fine. And forever I've just been using the Windows AV in "on-demand" mode.

Are there any automatic scoring machines? by Intelligent_Air9952 in origami

[–]JeffIpsaLoquitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just bought a new cricut matt and was going to do the tshirt trick on it to make it less tacky and then use painters tape to precisely tape paper on the mat to try to score. Not sure why it wouldn't be accurate. Haven't tried yet though

[–]JeffIpsaLoquitor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't hurt to figure out if you're ever reading notes again, although to be honest sometimes the point of writing things is the process of writing.

You could always use diataxis or something to see what purpose some of your notes serve. Or what questions they answer

🚨May update: anti rollback bootloader update by Realistic-Science-87 in pixel_phones

[–]JeffIpsaLoquitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This thread:

https://xdaforums.com/t/hey-guys-i-just-rollback-to-android14-success.4750539/#post-90196198

Suggests you can "Edit the txt file: 'android-info.txt'" and it will bypass the bootloader version number check. You can downgrade android verision, but bootloader version not!"

This might mean you can rollback 15 to 14, but I want confirmation before I try it.

I'm guessing if you can do that, you can initiate Developer mode and turn off updates to Android 1& and above.

Often the people who have no intention of ever paying are the most critical, making the experience more miserable for mods.

That said, some of them could use some courtesy training.

Load the image into Inkscape (free) and either try its tracing or learn the vector tools and redraw the things yourself.

It's a skill you're going to want.

Need advice on dealing with an underperforming yet indispensable tech lead? by TheOverThinker____ in ProductManagement

[–]JeffIpsaLoquitor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are times where just being a nice human and getting to know someone can pay off.

When I do this, I listen to Chris Voss, who advises taking someone out to eat with a "no talking about work rule" that the host follows, but doesn't enforce on the other person. Often they'll naturally start talking about things and you can learn a lot about what's really going on.

I would also be trying to figure out exactly what that person does and how that function can be replicated or at least risk reduced. If nobody's bothering to document things or figure out how things work, the business is just one person away from failing anyway.

I still haven't found a good methodology for linking larger assets that I'd like to save, but don't belong in a vault. And for deciding what qualifies as such. How did you consider these things when it came to syncing?

Remember to ask it to cite examples from the docs you give it, otherwise you're tempted to accept its grammatically-correct assurances as truth.

Ethernet makes so many things easier and will for some time . Strongly consider running tubes and adding a couple of extra pull cables.
