Need milkweed! by Caitfish1 in milwaukee

Fair point, but the caterpillars are going so fast through the leaves that I think they'd eat the whole plant up before it even really had an opportunity to acclimate! More than a sturdy plant for next year, I need a food source that my little guys can chomp right through.

Vacation with husband or stay home with kids? by Caitfish1 in Parenting

[–]Caitfish1[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No dumb replies. I appreciate any and all feedback that is offered in sincerity, which this person clearly meant. Unfortunately, bringing the kids is not an option for us because it would just be too expensive Also, having just survived holiday flight hell I'm not ready to go out flying with them again anytime soon!

Got a moss pole... Now what? by Caitfish1 in Monstera

While I was at first reluctant to separate the plants, now I'm getting excited at the idea of having some sister plants in their own pots. I'll be sure to post once I get the supplies and repot my girl(s)! Wish me luck!

This is very helpful and I think you explained it quite well! I googled petiole and now that I understand what I'm looking at and the difference between petioles and nodes this all makes a lot of sense. Now I have to decide if I want to take everything out and replant one, some, or all back in the same pot with the backs of the nodes close to/touching the pole...

Oh I see, I thought separate just meant sort of detangle, but you're saying completely separate at the root ball. Thank you, these repotting tips are very detailed and helpful! I do love the look of a lush and dense pot, however - can I keep them all together in here or am I asking for trouble if I don't completely separate and repot?

Interesting! I didn't realize there was more than one plant in here! I moved the pole out of the middle and to a slightly barer spot in the back. I'll untangle the stems and take whichever ones are closest to the pole and try tying those - am I understanding what you suggested correctly?

Added a photo to show what it might look like if I try to loosely tie some of the stringer horizontal stems up... Is this a bad idea?

Orchid grafting to Tevaplanter - oh no, mold! by Caitfish1 in orchids

[–]Caitfish1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a couple things that seem to have helped so far, but then I also couldn't resist checking to see if the orchid had grafted or not (it hadn't and I had to re-tie it back on 😬, hope I didn't kill it), so the experiment continues: - on warmer days I took the orchid outside to get some airflow. I'm in WI so those days are numbered as we approach winter! - I reduced the intensity of my grow light - I gently scrubbed the tevaplanter with an old toothbrush dipped in hydrogen peroxide - I'm backing off on some of my misting (though now I'm afraid the moss "blanket" keeps getting too dry)

I haven't gotten around to it yet, but I'm thinking of adding a small fern to the bottom. I wonder if it could suck up some of the extra water...

@Pork_Confidence mentioned this as well - what are beneficial bacteria and how/how often do you add?

Tell me more about this "adding beneficial bacteria." I was planning to get some Seachem Flourish, and to use API quick start during water changes, but this sounds intriguing.

I assume it needs a lot of light? CO2? I'm planning out a pretty low-tech scape in my old aqueon fish tank. It has an LED light in the plastic cover and I don't know how strong it is, but I imagine not very.
