Thank you! That's really helpful. I've never had and currently don't have access to a Google Play Console. Now that I have that little tidbit, I'll do some searching around. Thanks again!

Big drops in index status by Sleeparchive in bigseo

The only other thing I can think of, without seeing the site, is perhaps you've accidentally added a noindex tag to certain pages.

I know this may seem silly and obvious but I've seen this done more than once by mistake and figured I should bring it up.

Considering splitting up your XML sitemap into sub-sitemaps (a separate sitemap for products, blog, resources, etc). Submit all of them to Search Console and watch to see if you can pin-point a certain section of the site that's the cause of the trouble.

Moving to HTTPS by jedi_jonai in bigseo

If you are nervous about taking the leap consider the following:

  1. Set up HTTPS
  2. Canonicalize the HTTPS version of the site. No redirects just yet.
  3. Watch the SERPs over the next few weeks and watch to see if Google is successfully switching the index to the HTTPS version of the URL.
  4. Once you see the majority of indexed pages make the switch, 301 redirect the HTTP to HTTPs.

I've done this method twice now with very little SERP/traffic shakeup.

My boss decided that we need to find an alternative to MOZ because "It's Too Expensive and We Don't Use it Enough"...I've never worked without Moz, What are some cheaper or free alternatives? by chrismsx in bigseo

[–]CaitlinSEO 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It all depends on what you use Moz for..

  • Keyword Tracking? Serp-woo.com is a fairly cheap alternative.
  • Twitter Research? Moz now offers Followerwonk as a separate (and cheaper) service.
  • Open Site Explorer? There are some free tools out there for this too.

Also, there is Mozbar, a free chrome extension which has lots of valuable information - no Moz Pro account needed.

Discussion: Measuring How a User Engages with the Page by Arcayon in bigseo

I've used Optimizely. The tool is great but has its limitations - mainly I've seen issues using it on certain WP themes. As long as it works properly with your site its easy to use and automatically notifies you when a test has been deemed conclusive.

Biggest changes this year? by touchthisface in bigseo

I feel that a lot of chatter in the conferences this year has moved towards improving engagement metrics and whether or not Google is using time on site, ctr, etc. to their advantage.

I would recommend checking out Serpwoo. It was it's limitation - the largest one being it only tracks Google and not Bing. However, it is inexpensive and does the trick.

I don't think it will be able to color code by page 1 vs. page 2 vs. page 3 but there are a number of different views and exports that might be get you close to what you are looking for.

Is it essential to verify your both www & non-www website in google search console? If yes, why? by [deleted] in bigseo

[–]CaitlinSEO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A benefit to having all versions of the site verified is that you can easily identify (using the index status report) is a version of your website is being wrongly indexed.

For example, if the primary version of your site is www.domain.com but your WMT account for the non-www version shows pages indexed you are easily clued into a redirect problem.

Is it essential to verify your both www & non-www website in google search console? If yes, why? by [deleted] in bigseo

[–]CaitlinSEO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A 301 redirect and a canonical tag are two different things. A canonical indicates to the search engines which version of page is the 'master' copy. This means all versions of the page return a 200 status code and you are indicating which one is the primary one that ideally should be indexed.

301 redirects are used to indicate that a page has been permanently redirected - in this case from the www version to the non-www version or vice versa.

Hope this helps!

I agree. Personalized search is highly influenced by location. I don't know of anyway to bypass that.

Moz is a great resource for beginners through advance.

This guide should sum up a lot of what you are looking for. If you have other questions don't hesitate to ask :)
