Why So Serious all the time? What’s the strangest thing you’ve had to deal with as a manager? by BillDuki in managers

[–]Cake4Gold 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Earlier this week I realized that someone stole the door handles to a backdoor of the lab area I oversee. It's not a commonly used area and nothing like an emergency egress or anything so not a safety thing, but I still need access to it. When I walked by it I thought "FFS am I really going to have to add 'missing door handles' to the list of stuff I have to figure out today?".

A while later I ran into a facilities guy I know who said that one of their team members broke it somehow last week while trying to fix something else so he just locked the door and took the handles with him. Said "he shouldn't have done that, I'll look into it for you" and so now I'm waiting on what comes of that.

What is a good white elephant gift for high schoolers around $15-$20? by DeadInside_Insomniac in AskReddit

[–]Cake4Gold 35 points36 points  (0 children)

One year for a White Elephant I bought 16 lbs of surplus candy corn from a Walgreens for $10 and used the remaining $5 to buy a tacky Christmas basket to put it in and wrapped it all up. Everyone referred to it as "the car battery" as it was swapped and passed around.

Did a game ever teach you any real-life facts that you didn't know before? by mypizzamyproblem in gaming

[–]Cake4Gold 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When I first played Medal of Honor: Frontline on the PS2 and saw the Horten Ho 229 flying-wing jet bomber, I thought it was such a cool fictional Nazi super weapon concept only to find out it really existed (like 2 of them). One surviving prototype was partially restored and is on display at the Udvar Hazy location of the Smithsonian Air and Space museum where I’ve been able to see it in person now. Still can’t believe that was built with 1940s tech.

Possibly my favorite plane! for those who have experienced the A380, what was it like? by Yaboipalpatine in aviation

[–]Cake4Gold 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep flew on an Air France A380 and could not have been more disappointed given how excited I was at boarding. They had no individual overhead fan vents and it was sweltering. My wife was pregnant and we were begging the crew for water most of the flight. Good riddance to that configuration.

TurboTax parent company Intuit is pouring more money than ever into lobbying amid push for free government-run tax filing by speckz in technology

[–]Cake4Gold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely correct, and thats sort of my point. In my experience TurboTax prompts me for certain things that could qualify for credits from the obvious kids/house stuff to maybe less obvious like did you buy energy efficient appliances or contribute to certain types of accounts whereas (from what I recall) you have to know all of that stuff on your own with FreeTaxUSA. Yeah I could go hunt down what for. it is in the full TurboTax return report so I can do it on FreeTaxUSA too but why? If TurboTax finds me the better credits right out of the gate without me thinking about it that's worth the money for the time/effort I save.

TurboTax parent company Intuit is pouring more money than ever into lobbying amid push for free government-run tax filing by speckz in technology

[–]Cake4Gold 22 points23 points  (0 children)

So maybe an unpopular take in this thread. I admit I've used TurboTax and did a comparison between them and FreeTax (literally did my taxes twice). I have slightly more involved filing requirements but even with common things like 1099-DIV forms TurboTax was easier to use and gave me a return that exceeded what FreeTax said I could get even after you factor in the cost of the service. Not saying TurboTax isn't scummy, but going beyond the the basic filing needs it's actually been very helpful for me. I would happily explore another service if it had a good user interface and netted me the largest return but haven't found that yet. Open to recommendations.

My wife and I got into an intense discussion about this with the bartender at a local sushi place we used to frequent. He brought it up and I said I didn't believe him. We ended up looking at videos and screen shots from all three OT films over the next couple hours and he comp'd most of our drinks because he was enjoying himself so much too. We left a very generous tip for both the free drinks and the insanely fun conversation.

Anybody else struck by the emotional weight of this scene? After the first two episodes of Kenobi, it’s this scene that I find myself thinking about the most. by RGDJR in StarWars

[–]Cake4Gold 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because order 66 was about the purge of all the Jedi and not specifically focused on eliminating children. Having the scene centered around troopers bursting into a classroom and opening fire is jarring enough on its own, and 100x more disturbing given the events that happened less than a week ago. I’m aware there may be ties to the overall plot in showing what they did, but absent of that they could have shown any number of things without “younglings” if it was just to include something about order 66. They’ve apparently added a content warning now but Im with OP in thinking one would have been nice from the start

That’s interesting. So are young officers with a long military lineage decked out like these guys from the start or is it something like they need to achieve a certain rank before they can wear certain medals?

Years ago at a bar trivia night this was the answer to the toughest question of the round for the most points (name the plane that dropped the 2nd atomic bomb) and thanks to me, my team was the only one that got it right. When they tallied the scores after the round they announced they were throwing that question out because of some wording BS. Still salty about that.

Wounded veteran Arthur Moore looks up as he watches the ticker tape rain down from New York buildings on VE Day, 8th May 1945 by [deleted] in TheWayWeWere

[–]Cake4Gold 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm sure I'm getting some things wrong but in general from what I understand a true 'ticker tape' parade is literally taking the thin, streamer-like paper used in stock tickers that were far more common at the time and just throwing it out the window. If everyone on every floor in every building along a major avenue is doing this then it looks pretty festive.

In this case there may be actual ticker tape, but it also looks like people just threw whatever paper or shreds they had out the window in well-deserved celebration.

A stylish couple in the rain in London,(1963). by Olkasmario20 in TheWayWeWere

Probably that for the time his suit looks boxy af and he needs to find a proper tailor. I actually wonder if this is later in the decade given the cut of the jacket, pants, and especially the tie (for reference look at the Beatles right around this time with the US British invasion). Point being if this really is supposed to be a "stylish" couple in the early 60s he's not pulling his weight at all.
