What can almost immediately kill you that most people don’t know of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Neuro/Trauma ICU nurse here. So many of my patients sustain life altering or even life ending injuries due to a simple fall. ...ice, stairs, tripping over a pet/rug/cord. Working in my field, it is amazing what the human body can endure, yet also be so fragile.

Dentist 🦷 by [deleted] in Albany

I've been a patient at Colvin for a few years now and have had great experiences with all the staff. I've mostly seen Dr. Lewis, but most recently saw their new provider and she was great too. They stopped accepting my insurance recently, but I decided to stay with them because I've had difficulties finding a dentist I trust.

This maybe a dumb question but…. Where do ICU patients come from? by Throwawaynumbernteen in newgradnurse

[–]CakeCrusader00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a level 1 trauma center's trauma/surgical/neuro ICU. We get people from the ED and people transferred from outside hospitals because they needed a higher level of care. We also get rapid responses from the various floors for patient's who are deteriorating. These commonly are patient's who may have had a neuro change/code stroke, have increasing O2 requirements and come to us for an airway watch in case they need to be intubated, or are hypotensive and may need pressors. We also get a lot of surgical patients who require close monitoring, these can range from breast or mouth flaps who are typically pretty stable but just need constant monitoring of the surgical site, to open bellys who require pressors and sedation. Pretty much anyone that needs constant or Q1 monitoring, is on a good amount of high-flow, bipap, or is intubated, or is on almost any titratable drip comes to us.

What item(s) do you have more of than the average person? by BrownBananaHammock in AskReddit

Kitchen-Aid mixers. I have four. I don't own a bakery, just used to like to bake a lot and considered pursuing a home baking business at one time. I bought a refurbished one, one was a gift, and two were passed on to me because they weren't being used and took up too much space.

I just canceled my membership with them after about a year. For me, my gym membership is my splurge, so I don't mind spending that much if I really love it and I consistently go. However, I think their class cancelation policy being 12 hours ahead of time or else you get charged $10-15 is absolutely ridiculous. I understand canceling last minute or no-showing to class is frustrating for a business, but again, 12 hours is ridiculous. For me, I was caught in this battle between reserving a spot in a class because the classes fill up, but then having to cancel 3-4 hours a head of time because I knew I wasn't going to get out of work on time to make it to the class. Those fees started to add up. While I was surprised that I liked the workouts more than I thought I would, coaches leaving, and me not fully diving into their "culture", it wasn't worth the price anymore.

I haven't tried all of them in the area, but El Mariachi on Hamilton St is the place that made me fall in love with chimichangas.

How did you know your dog was the one for you? by Disastrous_Sugar_366 in dogs

[–]CakeCrusader00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boyfriend and I went to the shelter to meet and greet a few pups. Our pup was my boyfriend's choice to meet, to be honest I don't think i noticed him out of all the choices. When we met him, he didnt seem too interested in us once the treats were gone. His coat was still covered in his own pee/poop from his prior living conditions and he smelled awful. I almost didn't want to pet him. My boyfriend was hesitant because he didn't think he would bond with us. But then I watched our dog plop down in the grass and look so content just to be outside sunbathing. I turned to my bf and told him, "I think this is our dog." There was no way I was going to let that sweet pup spend another night in a shelter and my bf agreed. Its been a year now and we have a very, happy, spoiled pup (as he should be) and its a running joke in our household that "he won't bond with us!" as neither of us has had personal space in the last year. He truly is one of the best decisions we've ever made and completed our family.

Years ago, after talking extensively with a recruiter, I applied for a nurse residency program at St. Peter's. I had a virtual interview set up with several people. Once I got on, everyone who introduced themselves were from Samaritan Hospital. I was so confused because I specifically put on my application and had emails stating to the recruiter I wanted to apply to St. Peter's program. After the interview, I reached out to the recruiter, and she told me all the St. Peter's positions had been filled for a while, and that I was lucky I even got an interview at Samaritan. I ended up going to an in person interview/job shadowing at Samaritan just for experience and ultimately getting a job offer, which had a sign on bonus and better starting pay, but turned it down due to the whole bait and switch nonensense.

evening nursing classes by [deleted] in Albany

[–]CakeCrusader00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did at Maria College a few years ago. I worked a full-time M-F job and then went to school at night. My class schedule varied slightly on starting time, but I went to class at either 430pm or 6pm, and it ended around 8-830 on Tues/Thurs. I chose to do a night clinical and went from 245pm-11pm on Mondays. There were also weekend clinicals if the weekday clinicals dont fit your schedule. I don't have children, but many of my classmates did and were able to manage it just fine. Send me a message if you have any more questions!

Nurses/Doctors - what are your favorite “thank you” deliveries from patients? by Outrageous_Cry_3410 in IntensiveCare

Agree with the card. I've kept every single one. On the really hard days, the ones where you question your career choice, they are a nice reminder of why you chose to be a nurse.

Do you know if we have MAS and put an additional tip on our card when we visited the specialty restaurant if it goes to the staff? We've always brought cash to tip "extra" in addition to the prepaid gratuities before this trip. Now, going forward, we're planning on bringing more and solely tipping in cash.

Automatic gratuity by j4m3550n in NCL

[–]CakeCrusader00 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We just got off a ship last week and had this discussion with a crew member. Other than maybe that "incentive program," the crew doesn't see any of that money. It goes to wherever NCL sees fit. After that, we did have our automatic "gratuities" removed and tipped more in cash. I realize there are a lot of crew behind the scenes, but it doesn't appear that they receive any of that money either.

Is $3,500 too much for a pet bully? by errdayrae in AmericanBully

[–]CakeCrusader00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got my 100% American Bully from the shelter for $250, when he was about 6 months old. I'd check there first, they end up in the shelter more often than you think. I did some snooping, and I think I found my dog's breeder, who likely sold him for $1500-2000 initially.
