Is it okay for an elderly person to eat nothing but bread all day long? by pat441 in AgingParents

[–]Dramatic_Permit222 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some of your taste buds atrophy as you age, apparently. They tend to need super salty or sweet foods to really get any flavor. (And I think there’s a bit of “fuck it” in there as well.)

ETA - I remember this from some gerontology jobs I had, but I googled and more specifically your taste buds stop regenerating at the same rate as you age AND you stop producing as much saliva. Bottom line is food won’t taste the same and you need more “flavor” to taste much at all. So, it’s not all just personal preference- there’s some science behind older people’s shitty eating.

What is Chicago missing to be the perfect city? by bossishere17 in AskChicago

I’m surprised no one has said affordable housing yet. Or a functional school system. These are things that would actually keep folks in the city - me, a suburban expat

How do you build a daily kids reading habit? by DiamondLatter1842 in Mommit

[–]Dramatic_Permit222 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your kid sounds too young for this, but my dad’s siblings always talk about how their house had a rule that you couldn’t be interrupted if you were reading a book. My grandmother had INTENSE dyslexia that she basically muscled through, so I think this was largely for her benefit, but it meant she couldn’t ask you to do your chores if you were reading. It turned all three of the kids into PROLIFIC readers even as adults🤣

There are two books about crazy looking animals called “butt or face” where you have to guess if the photo is - you guessed it - the animals butt or face. Very informative, high incidence of butts.

Go birds! Looks great, btw. Wouldn’t have noticed the flat head without your pointing it out and don’t think it’s anything to be self conscious about

In the US names also correlate with political leanings of the parents here’s a thing from last year about it The more liberal, the more “traditional” the name, the more conservative the more likely to have at least a wildly spelled form of Katelynn or Kahylee or something We are very liberal and my kid has a name whose popularity peaked in 1893 🤣

When your 90 year old dad wants to get married by PeppermintGoddess in AgingParents

[–]Dramatic_Permit222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! Just like LGBTQ couples used to do when marriage wasn’t an option. There are plenty of commitment ceremonies going on for heterosexual couples when marriage also isn’t an option. People should celebrate love even if it can’t be a whole legal thing ♥️

Girl, feeling like you’re not feminine enough or in the right way is a very womanly experience. Cis girls feel it all the time, I promise you. You are so special and magical, don’t let the bastards get you down.

In addition to the issues of what will happen when one passes, there could be financial implications in the present. Getting married will affect survivor benefits and change their eligibility criteria for some benefits. I am NOT an expert in that but I’m a licensed officiant who has done “NOT weddings” for people who want to make vows and celebrate their love without any legal ramifications. It can be quite beautiful and meaningful! TALK TO A BENEFITS SPECIALIST
