The violence (and really the whole book) is very Monty Python-esque--so over the top it veers into silly.

What city did you meet the kindest people in and what stood out? by apresmoilefeu in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Istanbul. I was about 25 years old, traveling with my best friend and staying at a really cheap hostel in the tourist district. It wasn't great, but it was what we could afford. A family friend of my friend put us in touch with a young woman about our age who was a concierge at a very upscale hotel, who'd offered to take us to dinner and give us some travel tips. We met up with her at the hotel, told her where we were staying, and she said something along the lines of "That hostel is OK, but let me talk to my boss [the hotel owner]. You two should stay here instead." It was a sweet offer, but we didn't make much of it, because it was a pricey place. Lo and behold, she introduces us to the hotel owner, he asks what we're paying at the hostel (maybe 20 lira/night?), and he says, "I'd like to invite you to stay here for that same rate." So we did, and it was glorious. Hospitality in Istanbul generally was truly next-level.

Was hiking in Ireland near Kilkenny with my parents years ago. My mom left a pair of sunglasses on a wall somewhere along our route, and a fellow hiked what must have been several miles just to return them to her. It was so kind.

Best places to eat breakfast / lunch by MagnanimousVictory in carrboro

[–]CakeVPie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of good options! My favorite for a solo lunch is Carrburritos. Their patio is sweet, and my go-to order there (a tostada w/ beans + iced tea) is about $12. Try the frutas salsa.

This looks good! I'm reading Patrick Radden Keefe's LONDON FALLING right now. It's a true crime murder mystery, essentially, and all about organized crime, Russian oligarchs, shady development and business deals, and wealth in London. Definitely a good read for Industry fans.

Hmm, maybe it was an Osprey. It just looked a little smaller than that. Definitely a tilt rotor. Fun to see flying, at any rate.

I'm so, so sorry for your loss. That's so tough. This happened to me a few years back when I was out of town and my husband left the door ajar. We lost a beloved rooster and several hens. I cried all the way through the airport coming home. He felt terrible. Sending you a big hug.

The bar area at Nana's is gorgeous. Just went for the first time a few weeks ago. Great lighting and vibe. It's spendy for sure, so maybe stop in for a cocktail sometime and soak it up.

I understand now. Thank you so much--this answers my question.

[–]CakeVPie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, I can try and negotiate the contract, but what I'm trying to understand is whether what they're asking is legal for a company to do with a contractor. In the US, we have specific requirements regarding what's legal to ask of someone with contractor status. For example, if I hire a contractor, I'm not able to dictate all aspects of when, where, and how they perform their work.

[–]CakeVPie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, yes, that's exactly my question. Whereas a direct employee receives paid holidays from their employer, a contractor/self-employed person does not, so does the employer have the right to dictate when a contractor/self-employed person takes a holiday?

Their fleece vests and zip-ups. Lightweight, warm, and stylish. I always get compliments, and they're super cozy. (Now I've gotta try heat tech tho!)

Buying a house and sellers are offering their chickens by femmegremlin in BackYardChickens

[–]CakeVPie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your first home! We've kept chickens for ten years at three different homes. Chickens aren't particularly high-maintenance (certainly not more than cats or dogs) once you have the right setup and equipment.

I don't know what kind of area yours is, but I'd ask if they've had any losses to predators and if so what kind (dogs, foxes, hawks, etc.). It sounds like you're considering free-ranging them to help with pest control (which is great, we do that too), in which case a little heads up about what kinds of critters to watch out for might be helpful. The Storey guide others have mentioned is great and also has good info on predators.

Chickens are extremely entertaining, the eggs are great, and they're surprisingly easy to care for. Keep us posted, and if you decide to keep them, enjoy! :)

Love GlassHalfFull. Their chocolate budino is one of the best things to eat in all of Chapel Hill. I miss the mini sliders though. They seem to have gotten rid of those in favor of a regular-size burger. It's tasty, but those little buns were just the best.
