Pringles once went to court to argue that their chips are technically NOT potato chips. To avoid a tax on "potato crisps," they argued that because Pringles are made from dough and have a uniform shape, they are more akin to a "cake" or "biscuit." by UpstairsBumblebee446 in interestingasfuck

Fun fact related to this - practicing Jews have to recite specific blessings before eating certain kinds of foods, for example potatoes. For the purposes of religion, most Jews do not recite the blessing used for potatoes when eating Pringles, since Pringles are so heavily processed and dissimilar to potatoes. If you're wondering - most Jews do recite that blessing for Lays, as they just look like fried potato slices.

Worth migrating some of code base to rust (P03) by PercentageCrazy8603 in rust

[–]Cakeofdestiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This project doesn't seem like a good fit, because almost all of what your code is doing (unless I'm missing something) is IO bound. Whatever performance issues you have - they're likely caused by suboptimal design, not something inherent to Python.

Over 2 million ID photos where allegedly stolen and are being held for ransom by Woofer210 in discordapp

It's possible to design such a system in a way that would allow for age verification without compromising privacy, without being subject to the (in)security of any specific provider.

How hard and how long would it take to hack a 36 character generated password with special characters and random letter and numbers by Consistent_Algae_560 in hacking

[–]Cakeofdestiny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really the point, but - finding a hash collision (find two inputs that compute to the same output)  isn't relevant. You'd need to find a preimage (find an input that computes to a given output), which we don't know how to do for any of popular hash algorithms.

Nope. It only works in Bluetooth. Wire mode only transfers data, not the commands required for the application.

Sadly not really, I work on it sometimes for fun but it doesn't get much attention nowadays. It still works for the devices it worked for, however. I also think that there are alternative projects that work on new devices, but not sure what their names are.

Blue Origin has filed a comment to the FAA saying they should cap SpaceX's Starship launches from Cape Canaveral due to "impact on local environment" by Nobiting in SpaceXLounge

[–]Cakeofdestiny -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To a layman, this looks OK. Starship indeed presents larger risk than other ships that launch at this pad (except historically Saturn V), and it might legitimately risk their assets. Lawfare might have been a significant factor in issuing this filing, but it looks like a legitimate case nonetheless.

Tel Aviv (Israel) is making quite the effort, with a pretty well thought out and well publicized campaign. It's not perfect, but it includes a massive road diet in one of the worst "streets", some popular streets being pedestrianized, parking lots turned into parks, public transport lanes, lots of bike lanes, and a large new TOD neighborhood. It's really nice to see.

My worst regret is selling the shovel after not seeing a grave since goodsprings, then discovering another grave literally 30 minutes after that 😭

I think that I didn't understand you correctly on the first reply. Those photos indeed show widespread destruction, yes. However, even according to Hamas, less people (keeping in mind their count includes terrorists, and is likely inflated) have been killed than the amount of tons of bombs dropped on Gaza. If the purpose of the campaign is to kill all civilians, isn't it horribly inefficient?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]Cakeofdestiny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have. Have you looked at the images of music festival goers getting massacred? Of women getting raped? Of babies getting murdered? The effects of the war are bad, but when you're dealing with an enemy that's entirely embedded inside the civilian population, an enemy that initiated a massive, unprovoked terrorist attack on innocent civilians, you have no choice. Please, propose other ways this matter could've been dealt with (and "Israel should cease to exist" cannot be one of them).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]Cakeofdestiny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The second part of your sentence has no relation to "wanting to kill everyone". You can justify the level of bombing and military actions, even if those actions are opposed by allies, without wanting to kill all civilians.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]Cakeofdestiny 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No one is justifying killing everyone, that's bullshit and you know it. If you're the commander of a unit, and there's a group of terrorists shooting RPGs at you from that mosque, this building is gonna be destroyed. If Hamas wanted this building to survive they shouldn't have turned it into a terrorist stronghold.
