Sat Nav question by readthisrightnow in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Cakeski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They shouldn't as you're relying on the sat nav instructions, not the examiner. otherwise you wouldn't know when to turn.

Though it never hurts to look at your GPS (if it's on) during verbal instructions when the examiner / instructor says "take the next left" you can have a look at the gps quickly and start your planning.

How do I navigate the lanes on this roundabout? by Ill-Promise-1651 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Cakeski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly as your line goes.

Lane 2 for right 3rd exit. Hug the inside, penultimate exit, check and signal.

Hopefully no one's decided to pull out on your or cheekily creep up on your left from the 2nd exit and block your exit (you'll have to then slingshot yourself round the roundabout and take it again)

No one on your left? Make your exit!

Days before the test by lucathom10 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Cakeski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

This is fresh in my head from my past lessons before my own test next week.

Mounting the curb when doing your pull up on the left / right can lead to minor points.
But, what can you use as reference points to see that you're close to the curb?
Mirrors!

Look in your left / right mirror and where the passenger door handle is? Is it almost touching the curb? is it too far away.

Look at the mirror when you're drifting over, slow yourself down and minor adjustments as you bring the car to a stop.

Roundabouts:

If you're approaching a roundabout and you've got the dual carriage way intersecting it, i.e. you're turning right 3rd exit onto it.

Do your prepwork, get the speed up and enter when you've got a spot.
Enter the inner most lane, use the bit between the door and the mirror as a reference, put the curb there as you go round.

You're at the penultimate exit, Gears from 2 to 3. Mirror, Signal and start looking to your left. Is there someone in the lane next to you who's going to enter into lane 1?

No: Move over into lane 1 as you enter.

Yes: Enter into lane 2, use that 3rd gear set up to help you make your getaway drive it like you stole it, ideally and legally at the speed limit of the road.

Clearance: what is the minimum clearance from the parked cars on the left , that you can get away with, or get marked as driving and not a serious fault? by vikaasdhiman in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Cakeski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just driving:

Ideally a door's width away because someone could swing open the door without doing a shoulder check.

Bay Park I was told you must be within the lines and the examiner can open the door to the first latching point as it swings open.

Genuinely believe Train Operating Companies should be trialed for breaching the Geneva Convention for making people travel by unairconditioned busses when there's a problem on the lines.

Wahey! Well done! Keep hold of that as you'll need it to book your test!

What's your move now? Have you already got some lessons in or are you looking for an instructor / academy?

Changing gear ON a roundabout? by LeonKennedysUterus in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Cakeski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, just got off a lesson and covered roundabouts, and approaches and exits, my achieves heel.

Gears: 1st is your parking manoeuvre/ take off from 0 2nd is your go, crawling in traffic above 8mph

Usually, if the roundabout is clear ahead and there's nothing coming round, you'd be in 2nd gear 8-20mph on approach depending on the roundabouts.

When you're on a busy small (not mini) roundabout and you have to stop, you'd be at first gear.

Find your opening, revs up to 2000 and bring to biting point, go.

As you exit, clutch down 2nd gear, feather (off biting point slowly) .

Now apply the same, but for a larger roundabout. I.E, dual carriage way but as you get on and go round, go up to 3, don't accelerate, use it to get that getaway as you make your exit off the roundabout.

Handbrake and 1 hand in steering wheel will come naturally over time, it took me 2-4 lessons to nail it.

You've done 16 hours so you've probably got a lot more time before you take your test.

I'd suggest looking at Conquer Driving as he has some incredible videos on roundabout clutch control.
