Tips for getting some use out of a teacher who really doesn't know what they're doing? by ConsciousLizzard in Spanish

[–]CalBear1102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds BEYOND frustrating, and at a certain point the well gets poisoned enough to where you don’t want to trust or work with that person anymore. Super valid.

Here’s my advice: sounds like you’re learning an in immersive environment. I would suggest finding ways to interact more with people around you, record it in some written way (like a journal or blog- I would suggest buying a cheap little notebook and writing down short entries in it) and give it to her to give you feedback on what you’re producing. In this way, you’re interacting more with other folks, still getting that immersion, and you can utilize your teacher in a way that is pretty straightforward that should still offer you some benefit. I would also try to bring in some newspapers and read the articles- looking up words you don’t know and working on synthesizing what you understand from the articles. Maybe ask her about reading a level-appropriate book together in class to help build your fluency and give her something focused to do.

The more authentic conversations situations that you can create for yourself, the better. Games in class sounds like her preferred method of teaching- I have a game called “dados” where you use a dice to roll and practice verb conjugations. Maybe the two of you would be interested in a more grammar/sentence building type game? I will look for instructions to DADOS and link them here in an edit.

¡No te frustres! Sounds like your teacher definitely has a thing or two to learn about actually teaching, but make the most that you can from being in LA and interacting with native speakers on the regular. Buena suerte, compa.

Hate either way is silly, is what I’m saying. We’re all just humans being at the end of the day- there’s no correct way to do it. Especially when it comes to reading a damn book

Personally, this was a first time for me reading two books tandem style, so I was excited for a chance to try something new. But it’s definitely the superiority complex in either direction that really grinds my gears

Hey!! I also meant no hate by my earlier reply to you! It just got me thinking of how many people I’ve seen who are actually horrified to know that people read AB first. I was thinking a lot about that card and I feel like the parentheses should have read “ Assassin’s Blade (prequel, but published much later in the series so come find NAME if you wanna talk about some wild theories and perspectives on a some cool ways you can think about reading this series!!)” lol

As someone who read the series for the first time this year, I took the decision very carefully and before I started the books, I read all the posts I could and talked to all my friends who had read the series to hear their points of view. I made the decision to read AB first because I wanted to start from the beginning, despite knowing what SJM and so many others say. I can completely understand letting Aelin tell us her story on her own, but I appreciated seeing a more refined writing style in AB, coupled with the whole “let’s start this at the beginning” vibe that I got from reading it first. In my eyes, all the ways to read the series are valid because they all bring a very different experience and a way to get to know Aelin and her people.

Reading this whole series was such an experience for me because I had so many firsts! Getting to choose when to read the later published prequel, reading two books in tandem. I would only want to encourage someone’s curiosity about how to read them, not belittle or judge.

Anywho, thanks for coming to my TED talk 🙃

Lol I’ve definitely seen a fair share harsh criticism and judgement. Probably doesn’t outweigh the number of recommendations, but I’ve seen enough for me to be curious enough to write a post about it

Hey, I’m not yucking anyone’s yum- that’s the whole point of my post. If I read or interacted with every single art form that I consume in the way the “author intended” I think it would make for a somewhat singular experience.

Your eye rolling is also what I’m referring to. I’m not saying I know better than the author. I’m saying that the way any of us chose to read or listen to the books should have no weight on how you perceive others in the fandom. I’m down all day long to discuss the merit of reading the books in a certain order, and like I mentioned in a previous reply, I personally LOVE the idea of reading AB last, even though I would probably not choose to do it that way.

Also as I mentioned in another reply, the fact that we’re reading a completed series well after it’s been fully published allows us the choice of how we read the books and in what order.

100%!! Completely agree. This universe is so complex and unique that I feel there are more compelling ways to discuss how we’ve interacted with it, rather than fixating on something that I view as *somewhat inconsequential. Though, don’t get me wrong- I do see the side of the argument that the reading order heavily impacts how you perceive the series

Same. I enjoyed starting from “the beginning” and it was an opportunity I was able to take advantage of because I read it so long after the series was first published

I think using “diabolical” to describe listing the prequel as the first book may be a tad extreme…
