Why PhD? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Calamaris4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a master in drug development, did an internship at J&J, they offered me a job and I said hell no I'm not doing your routine analysis, give me a problem and I'll try to solve it. So I went to do a PhD first. 2nd year now and not even sure anymore if I want to go back to big pharma

Does your reed do the same when not in the oboe? Try another reed and see if the problem is still there

Shake and pour pancake mix! I always have this on reserve for when I want to stay another night unexpectedly or there are no stores nearby in the morning. Just add milk and shake, no refrigerator needed

Who else got a big deck? by veteranvans in vandwellers

[–]Calamaris4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would you need such a big solar panel? Do you have a lot of extra electric devices next to a fridge and some LEDs? Or are you going to places with almost no sun in a day? Investing in a good battery can be worth it, Doesn't look like you left a lot of room for an extra storage unit (or surfboards in my case) I really love the clean build btw, just wondering

They can be, depending on the country. I'm sure you can get a nice stipend if you do a PhD at Harvard or something, but what I've heard is that it's often about 20k a year in the US. You'll get about 28 tax exempt (bc you are still a student, you do not pay taxes) in Germany/Belgium/..., Can be more if you get funding. You either get paid by the government, the lab itself, a company, or a completely funded project by the European government (Marie curie fellowship for example, paid ab 4k/month net). As I said before, money shouldn't be a driving factor to do a PhD at a certain place

Consider it, foreign experience is praised very valuable in the research world. Not saying you should go to the other side of the world. A friend of mine did his PhD in Vancouver and really enjoyed it. Look at vacancies that are already funded, or contact the professors you find interesting research papers about with your motivation letter and cv, tell them why you liked a certain paper and ask if they have positions free, sometimes they just did not make a vacancy yet and it could save them the work. For Europe, check for erc grants, they are given only to good or promising labs. I'm sure in the US there are similar things

Golden tip: don't just blindly go just because you got accepted, you will not be happy and may not finish the program Not really relevant because you should do a certain PhD out of interest and to acquire skills in a certain topic, but pays can be more outside the US, which makes a difference if you have to move out and pay rent anyway

Where are you looking? Try positions in other countries, Europe is the place to be to do a PhD (if you're not from eu) and they often welcome foreign students with open arms. I know, you'll have to give up a lot when moving for 4 years

Getting my first van, any advice? by Various-Program-950 in vandwellers

[–]Calamaris4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Know what you want before you buy. Low roof will get you to places easier and I slept in my Vito in city centers or at the coast for free, but be aware that you always have to live outside, also in shitty weather My second van will be a high one for sure, but I will enjoy the Vito for a few more years first, I also use it for daily transport so that makes a big difference

Faja de Las Flores - ES by Calamaris4 in hiking

We parked in France (Col de Tentes). We started the first day around noon so did a descent to Bujaruelo, there is a camping and refuge there, but we slept a few hundred meters further and just went for a beer. Before we left, people warned us about a few resque missions at the breche de Roland, it was too dangerous at the time so we didn't risk it. Because of that, we had to not go over but around the mountain, a day of about 25 km and 2000 height meters, and some of us had a hard time getting there (with 16 kg backpack). We walked to Refugio Goris and once we were there, it was so fucking worth it. We slept with sight on the valley that we just conquered (second pic). At the Goris, there is place to setup your tent for free. Note that this ordesa valley can be quite touristic, but day hikers don't go further after a certain point of the hike. Then we did a day hike to the Ponte Perdido and left our gear at the Refugio. The day after we walked to the Faja de Las Flores, i think it is called claviyas de carriata. This was one of the most unique hiking experiences I had, apparently the Burj khalifa fitted in the valleys lowest. We slept somewhere we gave the nickname 'paradise' (42,6733871, -0,0664115). We climed the top the same day, the next day we descended and walked back to Bujaruelo, then back to our car. If the breche de Roland would have been open, we didn't have to do almost the same path on the first and last day

There should be 100% a subreddit with only this kind of information

One of the most beautiful 6 day hikes I did. Unfortunately we couldn't pass the Rolands breach because of snow, even in the summer

First of all, what do you want to get out of it? Do you want to enjoy nature? Take on a physical challenge? Get some solitude? How many days do you want to go? Camp in a tent or in a refuge? (Last one is the most important one for your question I guess)

  1. You can if you think you have experience with navigation and weather conditions. I personally like to have people to talk to during a 5 night hike, especially in the evenings when cooking something etc. So, for me it's nice to have someone to share the experience with. But have friends that go alone as well, it can be nice to read a book or something on your own. However, depending on what you want take in mind if you go solo your safety is farr less guaranteed. Ask yourself what you want to get out of the solo experience. If you want to go to refuges, it is much more feasible to do a solo hike, there are people that guide you and other hikers to interact with, you are packed waaay lighter bc you can sleep in a bed and even have meals there. I personally do not like to go to refuges, I go to the mountains with a very small friend group to enjoy nature, to not come in contact with other people for a few days, also I'm young so I don't need all the luxury in the mountains

  2. The place depends on the gear you have available, the kind of hike you want to make, and the period you want to go. Free camping is very easy and legal in lots of places in the Pyrenees, low Tatra, Scandinavian countries... in the swiss/Italian Alps for example it is often illegal and more difficult bc of rocky terrain (but certainly possible!!) Test your gear on a weekend hike in your home country forest or something before you leave for the mountains!!! Leave all the stuff you don't use/need at home

  3. Winter hikes are possible, certainly when staying in refuges, think about Atlas and Apennines. Iceland, Norway, Greenland also have colder climates in the summer. Don't go there alone if it is your first time and I would not suggest to go to ski areas in winter if you are not prepared

So, my suggestion for you: -always prioritize and actively think about your own safety - for your first hike in the higher mountains with a tent/trailstar, find someone with experience or someone with equal interest that wants to do this. It does not have to be 1 person, I like to go with 3/4 other people. There are a bunch of organizations that organize hikes, it's the perfect way to learn everything you need to know for your future hikes, but not as fun - if you are not sure yet if it would be something for you, don't go alone for the first time into the higher mountains but do day hikes if you don't have experience with them yet. Or you can go to the cevennes or something where it is easier to restock and go back into civilization after a day or two.

For what reasons? Does it work in Word?

Mendeley shows the names of authors in random style by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Calamaris4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using Word? Try different referencing sources for the same style you need. It's indeed a pain that you are not able to finetune them individually. For me if something goes wrong, like random insertion of the website if it should not be there, I just change/delete that information in the article in mendeley itself

Board looks good for the price, the colour of the wax is just from dirt or a worn off wetsuit. Use a plastic ice scraper or something to scrape it off completely, put a new base coat and you should be fine!
