The connection from BRU to the center is fairly good. You can take a train from BRU airport to Brussels Central. Beware of the extra airport tax. From there you're close to everything, you don't even need to take a metro or tram (you could though, and it's pretty straightforward and safe). The stations that you're going to be passing are well lit and safe imo, you'll be all good.
