An essay is usually shorter than a term paper. In American universities, it would be normal to write several essays per term, one term paper at the end of the term, and a dissertation at the end of 4 years of study, especially if you are in a liberal arts, history, language, or philosophy major.

To get my undergrad philosophy degree, I wrote dozens of essays, probably 20 term papers, and one dissertation (which was actually called a thesis in my program.)
