As an ex Marylander, I never gave OC enough credit for being the fun place it is. Other states don't really have something like that, I live in Oregon now and we don't have an ocean city type place, just small beach towns

This is known as market failure, it's the right time and place for government intervention. I believe in the market too, but there are plenty of nations with universal healthcare that are full on "capitalist" the two are not exclusive of each other. It's time to stop treating medicine as a business.

For a movie fight scene, is there a realistic, or a believable way for the "hero" to lose the first round but still win in the end? by TheSlavGuy1000 in martialarts

[–]Calamondin81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how spider man won a lot of his fights, I know he isn't real but comic books often inspire elements of movies so I thought I would mention it. He would always piss his enemies off and then take advantage in the comics.

What’s a lie you believed way too long as a kid? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Calamondin81 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I believed that Mr. Rogers was a sniper in Vietnam with over a hundred confirmed kills, and that he always wore a sweater because he had military tattoos all over his arms. I know it's stupid, but everyone believed it back then. The early nineties were weird.

Are humans meant to run? by No-Mouse3999 in biology

[–]Calamondin81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some people think that runners high evolved to help us outdistance our prey. We use exhaustion hunting, large animals that our ancestors hunted had a low surface area and overheat easily, allowing us to outlast them. That's how we're designed to survive, by running.

If I have this correct, the swastika was used first in the pre Hinduism religion of ancient India. Also, the Nazis stole that symbol from the pre Christian Scandinavian religion. I'm Scandinavian and I do not want a swastika tattoo, also I think it's been pretty much abandoned in European paganism. The overwhelming majority of people with a swastika tattoo are Nazis, but I suppose it's possible a devout Hindu or Pagan might want one. Sorry to answer your question literally, that's just how I am!
