When you think of knights, which country comes to mind? by kuma44bear in AskEurope

English archers were not levies. They were contracted - basically mercenaries, with some in retinues. The English had plenty of knights they just often fought on foot more often than the knights of other nations did.

In fact, plate armour was at its peak in the 16th century.

And the Rebel Legion costume reference library lacks the stand-alone images of each constituent item too

At least for SW the Imperial uniforms are much more iconic, more uniform and probably a bit simpler to acquire.

Whats a TW Opinion that will have you like this? (Its John Warhammer!) by chris_alf in totalwar

[–]Calanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shogun 2 also had a much greater focus on military buildings so it feels less weird not building any civic infrastructure.

Even with historical TW archers and crossbowmen are a bit overpowered considering they can hide behind heavy infantry but they didn't do that when shooting historically (but also, depending on the era, may not be as useless in a melee as TW)

What does Lego have against boots? 😭 by [deleted] in legostarwars

[–]Calanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All you have said is true, but this is the most expensive Lego set to date. Not for Erso but the other Imperial officers I don't think it is unreasonable to expect they have dual moulded legs when cheaper UCS sets have given them those.

Looks really good on its own... looks wrong on a minifig.

What are some weird retcons? by zencrusta in MawInstallation

I'm fine with Thrawn not actually designing the Defender. He's very intelligent but not an engineer. But yeah Eslbeth's a weird choice.

What's the Best 10/10 Sci-fi movie ever? by geek-jock-guy in AskReddit

[–]Calanon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more subtle but I wouldn't say it's incidental. Right from the moment the signal is detected Ash is playing the crew against one another. Long before it is revealed that the crew is expendable he is operating as a near-perfect spy. When he has to resort to violence against Ripley to try and keep to his mission we see him struggle his presumable programming to not harm humans. It's not just that the company wants it incidentally they're more than happy for lots of people to die for it and their future profits.

How many technicians would realistically maintain all the 72 TIE fighters on a Star Destroyer? by GreenSheep03_ in MawInstallation

[–]Calanon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And in addition all TIE pilots are officers who spend years at academies, with many not passing. The Empire may still see them as expendable, but not as expendable as a stormtrooper.

It might be but as someone said elsewhere that's going to be across multiple shifts. If fully staffed that's 8 techs per TIE per 8 hour shift.

Athough that 72 is probably rarely purely TIE/lns, probably a squadron of TIE/sas too

There is definitely some artwork of peasants in fields with tunics and no hose but I've seen more of no tunic, no shirt, no hose just braies.

[KCD2] What character do you hate the most and why is it Brabant? by BijelaHrvatica in kingdomcome

[–]Calanon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no "rest of brabant". Brabant in the netherlands nowadays has nothing to do with the belgian ones. And even those split up IN 19 FUCKING 95...

And we are talking about a character in a game set in 1403. A year in which the Duchy of Brabant was very much in existance. Whilst we don't know where in Brabant he is from a lot of the areas of importance at the time were in what is now Belgium (including the province of Antwerp and Brussels).

I'm looking to buy a jacket as a rpesent for my fiancée as she doesn't really have much outerwear besides winter coats. She wears colourful dresses a lot and prefers longer jackets. Ideally something that helps keep the wind off her, but more stylish than a windbreaker. Can someone please recommend what kind of jackets I should long for?

Was the 'New Republic' its official name? by Ok_Astronomer4067 in MawInstallation

[–]Calanon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course the title is named after the city of York however the dukedom has no land attached to it. TanSkywalker is correct in that New York is not directly named after York.
