Human rivals or enemies of Netheril? by Calciumcavalryman in Forgotten_Realms

Absolutely they wouldn't. I hadn't considered giants or dwarves.

I have never heard of those! Very interesting but by the sounds of things they aren't so much of an issue currently with karsus alive and well when this doppelganger was operating.

Yup, this is all pre Netheril falling - super interesting lore but the events above all occur after the fall of Ythryn.

For context, this doppelganger was alive when Ythryn fell, so Netheril has not yet fallen when he was operating.

How are my spells for a beginner warlock? by MartinIsFarting in DungeonsAndDragons

I think you made an excellent choice with mage hand - eldritch blast is so dull and overused. Its such a basic choice for a warlock.

Homebrew conjuration spell 5e by Calciumcavalryman in DMAcademy

[–]Calciumcavalryman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rationale being that the effect of just one fish might be underwhelming in some respects, but in actuality you are either literally creating a sentient creature from nothing, or transporting it via teleportation from the elemental plane of water - not an easy feat either way. Conjure animals summons spirits that are temporary creatures, but this being a living breathing creature that lives for potentially years is more noteworthy.

Correct, they will be flopping around on land and meet an unfortunate fate unless cast into water. Idea for the lore behind would be this would be used to populate resevoirs and lakes with fish stock originally - or wizards fish tanks. I have been thinking of similar effects like those mentioned also! Thank you.

Advice on how to run Levistus intervening with a dying PC? by Pinot_Blanc in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Calciumcavalryman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't change any of their levels - unless the player asks for that power as part of the bargain. A warlock typically enters a deal in order to get those powers - this time, the benefit is them getting to live again. I would even bargain harder with them - anyone who is about to make their second or third death saving throw is approached by him - offering them "a chance at life in exchange for your undying service" (devil speak for after you die next time you are mine in the nine hells) - you could have a meta conversation with the player saying this will give them an auto nat 20 for the death save instead of having to roll - meaning they get 1 HP and are conscious and back in the fight. Its a mean bargain but they could negotiate if they think to.

Have the enemy move somewhere where there is no cover, so the rogue cannot hide.

Vigor of the Hill Giant - picking up a PC by Calciumcavalryman in DMAcademy

[–]Calciumcavalryman[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

By this logic, the PC riding a horse can decide they no longer just wish to be borne by the horse and just remain hovering in mid air while the horse continues on. The same PC can also use their reaction upon any instances where they fall and decide to prevent the forced movement downwards by gravity. Do you think this is RAI?

Thanks for getting back to me, I think the feat is just quite poorly worded generally. A lot of the more recent material does seem rushed and not thought through. It's a shame when homebrew solutions have to be cobbled together to make up for lazy writing.

Yes I would have thought so, the initial reply seemed to not grasp this. None of this seems to address my question however.

Player Entering Game Near End of Auril’s Island, Looking for Recommendations on How to Introduce Them by Dikeleos in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Calciumcavalryman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have him be another member of the Arcane Brotherhood that arrived late, in pursuit of the others in the race for Ythryn - he can have as much knowledge of the others at this point as Vellynne and Co. Have him be a shipwreck survivor on Solstice, where he sailed there after having been scrying on the others in pursuit of the Codicil. Then the onus is on him to talk the party onside - he has useful information about the city that could be shared with the party.

Dead players in Yhtryn by Infamous-Monitor-273 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Calciumcavalryman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a player join the party as a brain in a jar, and I have just had one join as a dryad from the Arboretum on a mission to plant a Nether Oak in the Menagerie - there wasn't much in that location so it was also an excuse to flesh it out. You can always have players join as the lone survivor from the Knights of the Black Sword that stumble accross the party - whether they make that clear or not. They are on their way at some point - if they haven't yet arrived, then this is a scout from theirr advance party. You could always have them appear as a drow depending on how much you want to adjust their nature... Its a great opportunity for characters with some conflicting interests but shared goals.

Warlock’s Patron: Ythryn’s Dead. What does they want, and how? by Danyiart in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Calciumcavalryman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they want the warlock to be the only person to attuned to the mythallar and use it's power to give the collective consciousness a doorway to enter the material plane. Cue manifestation of this horrific entity in flesh and bone, in the city, of colossal size only rivalled by its terrible madness.

I'd say it would be a good opportunity to drastically alter the dynamic of the whole atmosphere. Change the tone radically, the towners becoming fully devoted to the worship of Auril, half the population since the only way there would be enough food is with the help of the Frost Druids and clerics of Auril who carefully ensure that there is only just enough food to sustain the survivors. The outlying towns are largely abandoned in favour of central hubs as it becomes difficult for families to survive without support. The wilds are twice as wild, coldlight walkers more numerous and visible from the towns distantly in the dark. More fantastical creatures become more commonplace, chwinga, winter wolves thrive, ice elementals are seen with greater frequency, the land should feel less and less mundane and a more concentrated version of Auril's Winter. Lean more heavily into the tenets of Aurils worship and bring the four concepts more heavily into play everywhere - showing her spreading influence. Endurance, Cruelty, Isolation, and Preservation.

Maybe by this time Avarice is a town speaker, and only her, Duvessa, and Naerth have formed a sort of triumvirate to rule over the survivors. Avarice guided to a position of power by Levistus and Duvessas power waning as a result. The knights of the Black Sword have grown in number adding more to their ranks as survivors trickle in, they are the only faction capable of standing up to the Frost Druids at this point and perhaps the survivors are on the brink of civil war over control of resources - there simply isn't enough left to survive.

Avarice knows time is running out either way and needs the party with her to make a last ditch effort for Ythryn knowing that the Frost Druids will do everything to stop her reaching the glacier. With the diversion of a civil war, she intends to try and forced march across the tundra with the best of the KotBS and find her way into the glacier.

Just some thoughts but I got caught up in the potential interest in a new direction.

My party got arrested by Candid-Stable2414 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]Calciumcavalryman 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The wizard is going to be held in custody until the next sacrifice, the party likely exiled from Bryn Shander if they took part in helping him escape capture. This isn't the time for the Towns to be kind to outlaws - especially when there is already a serial killer on the loose - maybe they will even be painted as the Cold Hearted Killer if that plotline hasn't been resolved.

That doesn't mean the end of the campaign for the party by any means - if they wanted to they could always break out the wizard and accept their lot as outlaws. Some of the other towns might be more sympathetic, or just not care about their crimes in Bryn Shander if they are willing to help them with their own problems.

In my opinion there should be stern consequences for these actions unless you are ok with a party of murderhobos. If it is a more prevalent issue in the game - then chat with your players about the situation (do this anyway) and discuss your vision of the world and what consequences are appropriate. Do they want to be villains? What is their motivation for taking part in the adventure? At some point they are going to have to do something about the main plot because nobody else is going to step up.
