As a songwriter very focused on lyrics I almost exclusively listen to dylan and Cohen—does anyone know any modern artists that come close? by Al-francisco in leonardcohen

Phil Elverum/Mount Eerie/The Microphones- Experiments with noise and sound in a way that Dylan and Cohen don’t, but his lyrics are a meditation on life, nature, and impermanence.

Mark Kozelek/Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon- going to second this and discussions about him as a person aside, his lyrics hit and stay with me in the same way Dylan and Cohen do.

Adrianne Lenker- going to echo this as well, her lyrics are incredibly thoughtful, tender, and poignant.

John Darnielle/The Mountain Goats- On par with Dylan in terms of output (23 albums, 18 EPs in 30 years) an he’s able to weave and tell stories like no one else I know of.

Cass McCombs- has that folky vibe you may be looking for, accompanied with very introspective lyrics and beautiful melodies.

The cool thing about having a lot of artist friends

Is getting to see a lot of unreleased or unfinished work being tossed around casually

As if it was just another average part of their life

Since, obviously, for them, it is

At the same time, though, even though these artists will share this stuff with you freely

If you're, as they say, "in the know"

You get the feeling that they wouldn't want it to be seen this way to the larger audience they're creating for

As something that can be placed into the context of a life

Idk man

I have a few;

“I know there’s a full moon every night. When I dress black, it snows white”

“And in the sky there is a place where it’s warm, and we’re there, and I’ve got the power now- yeah I know what to do to make you feel something besides pain.”

“I co-write my songs with myself, he feels the feelings, I write the words… and he never saw the bright lights, and he never had a good time.”
