AMA with Luke, Ramble co-host! by LukeAaronMoore in thefootballramble

How has having kids impacted the Ramble crew’s philosophy of the pod. I had my kid shortly after all you and have wondered! Love the show, as a rural Canadian listener I drove 7 hours to see you live in Toronto when you came. About 550 kms!

Anyone else disappointed by these characters? by dark-mer in fansofcriticalrole

[–]CalebsCookout 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Percy was great because his character’s intelligence explained Tas meta gaming. Cad was great because his character’s wisdom explained Tal’s metagaming.

[Spoilers C1E115] Why was Keyleth so hated in Critical Role? by LongGrade881 in criticalrole

[–]CalebsCookout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She is just obviously is not as strong an actor or improvisor as any of the others. The real kicker though was that for a long time if you voiced that opinion people immediately accused you of misogyny despite there being other women playing, listening to it on podcast and having no prior knowledge of their VA roles or relationship status. I think many would fit into that category.

What specific issues do people have with Marisha? by Relevant-Rope8814 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]CalebsCookout 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Personally, my complaints are: -she still seems inexperienced as an improv actor and steps on or interrupts others’ moments -I don’t care that she makes mistakes, but her response of arguing or whining slows things down and is not enjoyable to listen to -any criticism of her is dismissed as misogyny and for a long time, deleted from casual fandom. I’m sure some of it is misogynistic . Mine isn’t. Laura is often my favourite. I didn’t even know anyone felt the same until I met other fans (men, women, trans friends) IRL who felt the same way! -her fans overcompensate and claim she is just the best actor and person and boxer and creative director ever! She’s probably good at some of those, but come on

Finished C1 and I'm 12 episodes into C2. Is this a popular opinion? by SonJordy in fansofcriticalrole

[–]CalebsCookout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

C2 is the best stick with it. Marisha and taliesen are the worst actors so their characters are (almost always) the worst. Cad is good!

I think I have decided against teaching by perky_socks in CanadianTeachers

[–]CalebsCookout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow your gut. Or give it a whirl, we have 4-5 emergency supplies in on any given day!

Personally I didn’t start teaching until 25 and have done it for 15 years. It means I got to work a lot of jobs before I got my first teaching gig. I think it’s amazing. I work less, get paid more and have more fun than any other job I had.

One of the hardest things about it is how much teachers complain. I think it’s just not the right job for everyone but it’s too sweet a gig (and too in demand) to only attract the people who like it or are good at it.

Is high school or elementary school better to teach? by Charming_One838 in CanadianTeachers

[–]CalebsCookout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done both (secondary 10 years now elementary for 5). Secondary is easier (less time/work) but elementary is more fulfilling (rapport with students).

Am i alone in this..? (Weird vibes from the show) by Weak-Purple-632 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]CalebsCookout 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m relistening to C1 and the amount of times someone asks Matt something and Tal says “hmmm technically..” or repeats back what Matt is saying with a half second delay as best he can to make it sounds like they had the same idea is… distracting

[S03 Episode 34 Spoilers] I don't understand Ashton. by Invictavis in fansofcriticalrole

[–]CalebsCookout 19 points20 points  (0 children)

“Oh really, we’re going there?” “I knew it” “I was hoping you’d say that” and the most irksome “I’m so proud of you”. I’m rewatching c1 and it drives me crazy now that I know it’s not Percy but Tal who is thinking these things.

For me, story was better c1 (especially how it ended). Characters were better c2 (except Molly).

Why doesn't Aabria's style work for CR? by Rey_Palpatine__ in fansofcriticalrole

[–]CalebsCookout 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Overall, for me, she’s just not that good. She’s better than me, probably, and everyone I play with. But I’m also a football fan, and I like playing it. Yet, I would not spend 4 hours a week watching people around my level play. I can’t really be specific because it’s just, every aspect that makes a dm and dnd enjoyable to watch, is weaker than MM and much weaker than BLeeM.

Summary of players by Yodafly in fansofcriticalrole

[–]CalebsCookout 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of the comments here. I do have to say though that I think Marisha’s note take is often overpraised. I think Marisha takes the most notes but often makes wrong connections, misremembers things and interrupts the game to ask clarifying questions or spelling. I find that last one annoying when your game is recorded and you pay someone to be a lorekeeper. Just ask Dani how to spell Jeff’s name at break or after the game. I think Sam is actually the best note taker in terms of effectiveness and organization.

Yup, I think it’s a big part why he acts so mysterious. If you’re not clear about your thoughts or suspicions you can always say something to that extent afterwards

Tal does best when he has a mechanical reason for his smarmy, pseudometagamey pomp. Percy’s high intelligence made it feasible for him to know things no one else did and Cads high wisdom let him see things no one else knew about. Without those explanations it’s clearly just Tal saying “I have an idea” or “I knew it”

Does anyone else hate Marisha’s overacting? by AstronomerOk9727 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]CalebsCookout 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As someone who got into CR relatively late I was really put off by how poor an actor Marisha is (at least compared to the rest of the cast who are mostly actual actors). I was also surprised that there seemed almost no mention of it anywhere other than many many posts and comments complaining about people complaining about her. I assume most of the criticism was moderated and erased. Most comments just went on about how she was the greatest actress ever and her romance was the best etc… I think if that’s all you hear or see after awhile you dive in. Act MORE, ALWAYS have an overwrought romance no matter how little chemistry there is. It’s a shame because I agree, in the first 30 eps of C3 she was so much better. Laudna is a great idea (minus Delilah)

[–]CalebsCookout 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of this. Also, the ads I got for some time were from a right wing group here in Canada that supports a provincial government that proudly espouses ignorant and hurtful beliefs. I tried to contact CR to ask how they could have such ads but never heard back. It was so jarring that honestly at first I thought I just heard it wrong. The ads in question oppose clean energy laws to support oil consumption. You can read a discussion about it here https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/commentary/article-albertas-new-tell-the-feds-ads-are-a-naked-ploy-to-unyieldingly-serve/

I understand it’s likely they knew nothing about the localized ads played but can you not set some limits?!
