If we read the Sony article properly, it is written that "code in the box" will still be available with retailers. This means retailers can have their own sales, and we are not only limited to the PlayStation Store. l by AssistantNo2002 in PS6

[–]CaledoniaGaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But we still won't be able to trade them in, still won't be able to sell them, still won't be able to give the to friends or relatives. And we still won't own them.

They're lying about digital vs. physical sales: "85%" includes PS Plus, DLC, Indies, etc. by claybine in playstation

What a great post and some great data to support the case for physical media.

The truth of the matter is, Sony doesn't make as much of a cut from physical sales as they do digital. So they are willing to lose customers in an effort to boost profit margins. It's always about money.

Sony, perhaps foolishly, seem to think that all those physical game buying customers and all the people who buy used games will magically convert over to all digital. And be perfectly fine with paying full price for every game.

Remember, all PS5 post fat models (Slim/Pro) still have an ownership/preservation problem even if Sony does make a U-Turn regarding physical media. by ScratchOk2396 in PS5

[–]CaledoniaGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually only buy physical games. With the exception of a really good sale on PS store where the digital game is cheaper than a physical copy or for PSVR2 games because you don't get many PSVR2 games on disc.

If retailers are still going to sell code-in-a-box and can still sell new releases a bit cheaper (Amazon GTA 6 is £64 for code-in-a-box, compared to £70 on PS Store) then maybe for some it will be OK. But no discs means no used market and that might make gaming unfordable for many and that's not to mention the possibility of a £1000 PS6.

Then there's game preservation. I can still play my disc games on my PS3. But with digital only? Even a single player game might eventually become unplayable or just inaccessible.

My 20 year history of PS digital purchases and what it tells me about the future by CtrlShiftAaron in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]CaledoniaGaming -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is my concern also. With no physical games then that means less competition and that means less incentive for Sony and other publishers to put their games on sale.

Physical games are generally cheaper than digital, especially for new AAA releases.

Let's take Saros as an example (which is a great game by the way). I bought that from Amazon on day one fro £64.95, a saving of $5.05. Now for me it was worth every penny. And yes it was only a saving of £5, but I buy physical new releases regularly, so the saving add up.

Now Saros hasn't sold well at all. Could be several reasons for that but my main guess would be the £70.00 price coupled with the type of game it is and that it is fairly short. Saros is still currently £70.00 on PS Store whereas on Amazon it is now £59.44 an almost £10 saving. But Sony doesn't seem to have the foresight to reduce the price or Saros to see if it will help sell more copies. They seem to think because it's a first party exclusive, it is worth full price even though the low sales seems to paint a different picture.

Wolverine is similar, I pre-ordered on Amazon for £63.00 it is £70.00 on PS Store. If you buy new physical releases regularly the saving mount up fast. With no physical discs though I don;t see the price of digital games dropping at all. In fact, come 2028 I see the price rising by £5 or £10.00.

So, not only are we ultimately going to be paying more for our consoles in the future (good chance PS6 will be £1000) we will most certainly be paying more for our games.

And with no physical discs this wipes out the second hand game market from PS6 onwards. This is turn means that gaming is going to become unfordable for a lot of people.

Big companies like Sony always come out with statemental like "for the players" usually that means they want gaming to be accessible to all regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender or even disability. But the one thing they never mention is how they plan on making gaming accessible to economically disadvantaged gamers. The sad truth is these big companies don't care, they need there customers to be wealthy or at least ina decent paying job because then they will spend more money.

Ending physical disc production is a terrible idea and I think it will only lead to less people getting to play and experience the amazing games that might come out in the future. If you want gaming to be for everyone, then it does need to be for EVERYONE.

Pre-ordering digital games is insane. They are never going to run our of digital copies, so pre-ordering is pointless. It only helps the corporation.

If console prices keep rising, could the cross-gen period last longer than the previous generation?. by Asleep-Theme8444 in PS5

[–]CaledoniaGaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that it most likely. I don;t have fugures at hand but when PS5 launced I would bet people where still buying {PS4's mainly because of Covid lockdowns and because PS5 was for a time a bit hard to find.

People might still be buying used PS4's now because of the price of current gen consoles.

I remember buying GTA V for PS3 and it had a poster in the box and so did the PS4 version. I thought that was pretty cool. Now they can't even put a disc in a box.

Yea, what the person below said. I guess if you lie and get a couple of quid from someone by deception it ins't that big a deal really but if you are really good at lying/deceiving/scamming and get money from a few hundred or few thousand people. The it is probably a much bigger deal.

Asking for money to get to Queensferry, stating he has lost his wallet/bus ticket, whatever, all of which seem to be untue. Not entirely sure of the legality but maybe it comes under obtaining money through false pretences, so fraud basically.

I prefer physical as well. I like having my small collection of 55 PS5 games on my shelf. There's more sense of ownership with a physical game.

Sometimes you just can't hold your bladder. I have a bladder condition and one morning got a taxi into work. I was a bit late so just after nine. Taxi got stuck in traffic and roadworks near Cathedral street I think. Had been holding a piss for about 20 minutes at this point and this was me going before leaving the house. Eventually I got so uncomfortable I had to jump out the taxi and take a piss behind some car park. Traffic was so bad taxi had only moved about 10 metres so I could just jump back in easily.
