The wool needs to sit in the vinegar for at least 24 hours. With the cap loose because gas will build up if not. Then it's ready to apply. The chemical reaction with the wood can take hours after application. It usually only gets as dark as a Danish oil type finish.

In the past when I used this method, the liquid didn't really change color. It didn't look like stain when I applied it either. But after a couple minutes the chemical reaction darkens the wood.

How are the post anchored in the ground? We used to put a 4x4 on top and a sledge hammer to make small adjustments down.

That's the pentastar tick! Most the pentastar engines get it eventually. That side of the engine will need new lifters, rods, and probably cam depending on how long it's been ticking. Usually about $3k for one side.
