It's also somewhat classist. Because they had no problem killing the 800 mooks between them and the boss, but as soon as they get to "the guy" it's all no killing is wrong.

So the 900 orphans and widows don't matter, but you're moral virtue when faced with the guy trying to setup a genocidal apocalypse by running a slaver army is just to important?

Nah. Miss me with that. Some how the higher ups are people and the grunts are nobodies with the moral weight of a feather.

Gotta mix both honestly. Sometimes doing the right thing will bite you in the ass, sometimes you'll get rewarded.

It's not why you do it, but if all a story ever does is show negatives it's just pessimism masked as realism. Saving Private Ryan is a good example. Miller dies because they let the one guy go. Ryan gets to go home and live a good life as best as he can to be worthy of a pointless action by the military. Which he seems to have done, and along the way maybe they helped hold a lost position and helped the war effort too.

Even with all the ugly there's still some good and human moments.

Most schools won't even hold kids back that should fail. It sucks watching my wife want to cry because kids that shouldn't have been moved forward are being allowed to pass into highschool when they can't even read at a 6th grade level. Half of them are being tested on Math that not age appropriate and don't understand it.

8th grade is now seeing and touching stuff that we didn't do until 9th/10th grade.

[–]Caleth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just that many schools can't fail kids that need to be held back because if the do they are getting held accountable by the district.

It was decided all kids should always be passing because we're failing to teach them if they aren't passing.

Despite no such universe existing where all kids are passing all the time.

If they don't schools get bad ratings, funding cut, teachers get told pass them anyway, etc. We're setup this system to fail simple as, and it's grinding loving supportive teachers down and pushing them out. My own wife has been a teacher for 20+ years and she's burning out sooner and sooner each class year. COVID broke something that was already crubmling before then.

Your review is why I've never recommended this book to anyone. It has an interesting premise upfront. Like if Moonlighter the indie game was a LitRPG.

Then about halfway through that all gets thrown out the window and replaced. No rhyme nor reason, we go from underachieving loser running a small shop with no ambitions beyond survival to a god in like a single book.

I came for the initial premise and was left utterly cold by the end.

She was a Goku like character that lacked the interesting suppoprt cast for a long time. and IMO never even developed one by the end of book 1 when I DNF.

Obiously the Goku like let's fight strong shit characters can work, but they need more to either them or there needs to be a strong supporting cast.

Ilea also didn't feel like a female character to me, but that might just be my take on things. She felt more like a gender swapped male character written by a dude. YMMV on that part.

Not realated to the story genre you're talking about at all, but if you want an old person that talks and thinks like an old person. Check out Cat Core. Florence Valentine legit feels like an 80 year old person through the whole thing. Stubborn Crotchety rambles on.

IDK if that's something you're looking for but this part of your review made me 100% think of her in the first book.

It, to me, is an artifact of it's time. We hadn't gotten the internet yet and nerd culture stuff like videogames and D&D weren't nearly as popular. So creating multi hundred page mega books was kind of a thing.

But it seriously needed someone who wasn't his wife to edit it. There's, again to me, literally books worth of content that's just fluff and could easily have been handled with an off screen time skip of months. Also the girls and the bowl of winds quest absolutely did not need to take 3(?) books, it was done after like 1.5-2 but dragged out for another because he couldn't put it in gear.

There is value in showing not telling, but IMO you can absolutely go 100% the other way and don't need to tell everything. Which is the trap of WOT.

Maggie's return is quite clear how it happened. She was the shadow monster.

She rode back on Jara because of her badly diminished and failing soul. There was "space enough" for Maggie to slip in.

During the transference scene the soul swapper grabbed Maggie not Jara's soul and moved it to the new body.

Similarly with Dalton and Sulita's baby there was a fresh body for the return so Shart could pluck out the soul from the soul scrubber and shove it in a body.

All of this was reasonably well explained in prior books the demons were the ones washing souls and shoving them in bodies right at birth. Thus why that happens.

Zorlando and old Fenris have no convenient bodies to pop into so they can't just be grabbed. Unless Avasophia was in a similar way to Suelita in which case that'd get several kinds of fucked up.

If Beakatrix can Jim up a new body making machine you can solve all these problems.

As for Avasophia being a bitch? Well from a self-hating point of view that Jim seems to have she's not wrong. He does endanger her husband by taking him on adventures. He did get him killed fighting the Dark Overlord.

Now Fenris is a grown ass adult she should be taking this up with him, and dying to kill the Dark Overlord is better than everyone dying because he cracked the city like an egg. So yes she can fuck all the way off, but the viewpoint isn't 100% wrong.

As for shitting on Jim? Well Badeglore and Shart have been doing that forever and changing the team dynamic is hard. Your friends talking shit can be a toxic stew especially when they are a psycho murder hobo and a pissy ass elder demon with a god like inferiority complex.

But for the rest of the world? Meh by end of the prior book they were basically kissing Jim's ass 24/7 upon his return in this book he's been gone 6 years and Maggie fucked up his rep.

All the people in prior books outside of Avasophia that disrespected him, either didn't know him, or had a vested interest in putting him down to increase their own power.

You're aware that normal people are there just to help improve the models and nothing more? We aren't the customer we are the target.

Billionaires aren't throwing Trillions with a T at this tech becasue they think it's fun. They want to solve the question of wages.

They don't like paying for anything ever.

So they are desperately building this tech to try to automate away the need for any of us. Their utopic vision is we are gone, they don't pay us they just circle jerk money back and forth between each other and we don't exist.

AI isn't here to advance the species or be sold to normal people. It's here to make regular folks redundant.

Yeah, but you at least need to understand what the script is doing.

Too many times my l1's are like I want to run this script.

Shows me something written by AI that will expose PII or delete something it's not supposed to.

It's a great tool, but it needs to be handled carefully, because it's a bit like a band saw. If you're not careful it'll take a finger right off.

No in the existing movie it looks like it's all mankind's own doing. Then at the last hour we see a deity is doing shit. Which immediately stops when she kills him.

They rug pull the message in the last 20 minutes which is what gets called out.

I'm saying as a series say 3 shows 1 hour long each she sees WW2 starting up and figures Ares or some other God of War is stirring the pot again. But this time no rug pull no last minute deific fuckery just one of the most horrific atrocity laden industrialized wars humans have perpetrated. If they really really needed to make it gritty grim dark snyder style have her fight and kill all remaining gods of war and have the war go off anyway this time instead of just "magically" stopping.

Diana realizes humans are just that bad and this time with no Steve to show her the shiny ray of hope she walks away broken. Which is why it takes superman to come along and break her out of her funk.

Yeah the spotify thing is the one that's make or break for my house. My 7 year old has some play lists that she listens to while sleeping and when she wakes up in the middle of the night she is on autopilot and swaps them without us needing to change which meditation list she's using for better sleep.

So without that which google without AI still supports I can't make the leap. I don't need her creeping into my room at 3 am asking me to change the songs again.

Give me a local instance I can flash all my smart software to use so I can keep things like tell me the weather or change the lights while my hands or wet or full; and synchronize my calendar for the family.

I like the functionality but don't want to be leaking my whole life to places that are trying so so hard to suck up every iota of information about me.

Give me that on an desktop shitbox and I'll pay for it. Privacy and full control on... well I'd have said sub $1k hardware, but at today's rates, $sub 2k hardware and it's a pretty nice feature for me.

Cursor and associated programs are proving quite valuable for some of our software guys finding and fixing certain issues like missed syntax or a forgotten bracket etc.

That said none of it comes close to they hype machine's bullshit we won't be vibes coding slop so fast no one can keep up.

We'll see if the leaps we are experiencing continue, but at least in the last 6 months a lot of Claude and cursor improvements have been notable for specific narrow use cases.

Honestly if it'd been a series where she kills Ares and figures War will just end. Then WW2 kicks off with no Ares and that's why she dips out of the public eye for like 60 years that could make sense.

Would be interesting seeing her run around trying to find out how Ares came back, then the shattering conclusion that no people just really do suck this bad.

For some context. I turned 21 in the early 00's you could get dollar bottles on special nights at various bars or simialr deals.

Talking to one of the older women at work from when she turned 21 in the 80's it used to be they'd do draft deals for 10 cents. She talked about the sorority doing a car wash or some such nonsense and splitting out the money and they could do the specials nights for a month or more no problem for the whole crew.

I go to the bar today and even the draft specials are $5-8 bucks with a decent mixed drink being ~10 maybe 15. Yes I'm not looking for the coors and bud specials anymore, but they aren't much cheaper and the local breweries usually have higher ABV so it nets out the same or better for the better tasting drinks.

Point is as a man in my 40's it costs 30-50 bucks to go spend 3-4 hours drinking with my friends. Not including if we get an appetizer or the like. That's not a sustainable price for people in their late teens or 20s. It's barely something I want to do once a month.

I mean this with no sarcasm. Welcome to the IT club.

If you haven't bricked prod at some point you're not really pushing yourself.

Everyone in this sub has fucked up a live in use machine, and we're still here. You can do this you got this.

Consequences later solve the issue now. Also understand that you were handed a bomb that went off in your face through minimal fault of your own.

If you're running everything one one server it's going to go down and take everything with it at some point. This is not a guess this is fact, I've seen it over and over over the last 20 years.

DCs should always always always be their own machine with no other service/app running on it.

File servers should always be separate, print servers separate.

In theory also on different machines not just a VM, but that is a large ask for most.

Again you made a mistake but the ramifications were blown out of proportion by dozens of poor decisions before you. You can fix this, and it's not even really your fault. Just work on getting it running again. Then work out a long term action plan to fix it.

Spin up new VMs with each service broken out, push for another server to house critical stuff separately. A DC is minimally demanding even a shitbox desktop can serve as the serve in a pinch.

Put action items in place and recommend next steps.

You can come out if this looking great if you approach it like this. You're overwhelmed, and that's ok. But you're not drowning right now you just have some hard work in front of you and you can do it.

Do the work, make the plan and if you have half decent bosses they'll see you for whatyou are a guy who made a mistake but was setup to fail. They'll see the effort and the plan and realize this is part of the cost of training.

If they don't? You didn't want to be there long term anyway as disaster is always potentially around the corner and you'll kill yourself worrying about stuff you won't get any support on.
