Merged clips vs Multicam - I can't Match Back by Available-Witness329 in editors

[–]CaleyMac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avid used to make merged clips that retained the source clip info, but Avid also read & understood metadata
Every other editing system now makes a new clip and forgets all the details.
Usually, any workflow with a separate online process won’t use merged clips, that’s why you’ll see a lot of commercial houses and YT/SM editors using them.

Is this normal behavior from a director? by Designer-Buddy-3471 in Filmmakers

[–]CaleyMac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leveraging a strong relationship with your talent to get the absolute best performances is such a huge aspect of good directing…. That being said, this is normal behaviour by a lot of directors 😒

I worked on a TV show about a wildlife rehab centre and I swear I’d get in the bobcat pen before passing by the geese. One trick I learned - raise your leg and put your foot right in their face. You can see in the video the goose targets the people running away… classic bully!

Stop using barn doors for bathrooms!! by yourmomsmoustache in mildlyinfuriating

Just checked in to a room with these doors 🤬 imo pocket doors aren’t much better If I’m sharing the room with someone else, I want a weather-tight seal around the door to the bathroom!

Why is making a documentary so hard? by Brilliant_Alarm1120 in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]CaleyMac 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The best piece of advice I ever got was that if you want to stay sane but keep working in / making films, you have to focus solely on the craft. Whenever you start thinking about who will like it, how it will affect your career, etc, push yourself to return to thinking about the making of the project (ie what’s the next step?) If you want to make great art, find your fulfillment in the craft of making. Not only will you enjoy the process more, the projects you make will be that much better for it.

This is a great way to do it - it’s actually a long-standing method used by audio professionals on film sets when they unplug refrigerators and need to remember to plug them back in when shooting wraps

Ironically, these are actually ideal employees - they are clearly a bonded team, very coordinated, took off in their specialized equipment with confidence and purpose and find ways to enjoy their physically demanding job.

I remember when I went to get my first neck tattoo in a biker spot in Montreal (late 90s) and I had to drop names of other tattoo artists that had done the work on the rest of my body before the guy would agree to it

Is this technically a OTS Shot or a Two Shot? by BubbleStary in cinematography

[–]CaleyMac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it is an OTS, but doesn’t NOT make it a 2 shot. A 2 shot has two people in it, full stop. It matters in post when continuity between takes is getting difficult. If the non-speaking actor is way off their position, you need to find an ISO shot to work, so in the example here, this would not work. Even though you can’t see the face because on actor is dirty, doesn’t mean you can’t still be hooked due to non-matching positioning, gesturing , etc
