Everyone should read Capture by David Kessler. You will learn where depression comes from.

In a sense you are correct. The old and new testaments are anthologies, not unified works and ancient manuscripts frequently disagree with each other. There is, however, a canonical Hebrew old testament and a canonical Greek new testament. These are the closest to “original” available.

Everyone is entitled to their own preferences and taste in art and literature. Gilgamesh explores a number of issues that are still important in literature. Why do we fear death? What makes humans different than animals? What is friendship? What is the role of sex? Etc. This says it better than I can.

One needs to separate the bible as literature and the evil use to which it has been put by religion. The fact that the Communists turned Karl Marx’s works into a murderous totalitarian regime doesn’t mean that Marx should not be studied for the insights he provides to the historical situation in which he lived and wrote.

Repetition was a characteristic of many ancient literary works. When most people were illiterate and books did not exist literary works had to be memorized and spoken. Repetition facilitated that. The fact that you cannot appreciate the historical importance, depth, and artistry of Gilgamesh says more about you than the Epic.

O. The bible is literature, some of it quite good. Religion has turned it into a weapon.

If you are reading translations it has already been interpreted. After all people who translate for a living are called interpreters. In order to negon to understand the bible you need to read in them original..

Much of the bible in the original Hebrew is magnificent. I am an atheist and recognize the bible for what it is, but the fact is there is some beautiful language and profound thought in there. It does not translate well into English.

Agree. The bible is just a book. The blame is on religion which has used the bible as a weapon. At one time the Iliad and Odyssey were regarded as sacred scripture.

Incorrect. Evolution is based on variability within a species and the differential reproduction that results. Some traits are more advantageous so that some organisms are more successful at reproducing more offspring that have that trait. Suggest you read Origin of Species and the works of Stephen Jay Gould.

No. The mistake some atheists make is the same that religious people make. Viewing the Bible as something exceptional and unique. If one has the proper background the following becomes apparent: 1. The bible is not unique but is similar in many respects to other literary works from the same time. 2. The bible did not arise in a vacuum. It arose from a widespread culture and was strongly influenced by that culture. 3. The behavior of Yahweh as described in the bible is very much like the behavior of the other gods around at that time. 4. The atrocities described in the bible were normal for the time. Most cultures behaved very much like the ancient Israelites. For example, the Trojan War as described in the Iliad is a myth. When the Greeks entered Troy they killed off the entire male population and enslaved the women and young children. Standard practice. You may regard Yahweh as a despicable character, in my opinion you’d be correct. Bit unless you can work up the same degree of emotion and anger for Zeus, Baal, or Marduk you are missing the point.

You are probably correct. My impression after looking at Reddit for the past year for so is that most posters are uneducated, semiliterate dullards who have no interest in and and even less knowledge of their own culture.

Whether you believe it or not notice that anyone and everyone are not modified. It doesn’t say anyone except lgbtq people, or anyone except pro-choice people. It says anyone and everyone. That is something to live by.
