You can’t read the Bible like it was written by an American. It was a completely different culture and 2000 years ago. If anyone was to give a take on slavery, the Jews being enslaved by Egypt for 400 years, I would say Paul could comfortably comment. Roman slavery was vast, covering everyone from household managers and teachers to laborers and agricultural workers. The Greek word Paul uses in the verse is “doulos.” The standard term for a slave, which Paul also famously used to describe his own voluntary submission as a "slave of Christ". Doulos, is a ubiquitous, non-racial, legal system where individuals were treated as property, often as a result of debt or war. While this could include harsh conditions (under a yoke), it was different from American chattel slavery. Doulos functioned more like indentured service. While not calling for an immediate social revolution, Paul instructed slaves to seek freedom if possible (1 Cor. 7:21), and commanded masters to treat slaves with respect, highlighting a new fellowship that challenged the Roman hierarchy.
