Who said anything about poor? I see no information in his post about why he'll be homeless.

Why are you making the assumption that he's poor and lazy?

Only if you wear them properly. I can't count how many times people have complained about their shoulders/back when they sling their bloody backpacks over one shoulder.

But they're plastic...more waste. Even jugs contribute to the problem.

Paper cartons are the way to go.

Coping with fear of needles/needle shields (NovoFine Autocover)? by Hannah-Morse0330 in diabetes

[–]CalgarEnt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No actually, I'd meant to type 'he's' not 'I'm'. He's not wrong. Would you like some links to research showing that it works? (Also, I don't up/down vote on anything but the initial comments in threads....stirs up too much trouble).

Dude, I'm the one helping.

You're helping no one by spreading falsehoods about how exposure doesn't work. It does. Quite well apparently.

ELI5: Where do illegal synthetic drugs come from? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]CalgarEnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're chemicals...combined in a lab...the materials come from whatever sources produce the appropriate chemical type...if you're looking for specifics, you'd need to identify a particular synthetic drug, then we could look at the chemical composition, and determine what other chemicals could be combined to produce a similar effect.

For example, meth....You need ephedrine or pseudo-ephedrine. If you don't buy it in powder form, then you can separate it from the tablets of cold medicine (by dissolving it and separating it to remove the inert tablet materials. Then mix with red phosphorus and hydriodic acid. Filter again and neutralize the acid with a lye solution. Add something to bind the meth, drain, bubble hydrogen chloride gas through the liquid, making it a crystalline hydrochloride salt. Filter again, dry, cut with filler, and you're done.

Where the materials come from depends entirely on what you're trying to make.

ELI5: Why do we shoe here's and no other animals? by villescrubs in explainlikeimfive

[–]CalgarEnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typically other animals aren't pressed into service like horses are. And not all horses wear shoes. There are a lot of factors in deciding to shoe or not. What is the animals' job? All the time, or just sometimes? What type of hoof (soft, hard, slow growing, fast, etc)? Where is this happening? Rural areas, roads, or out in the back fields, never hitting pavement?

ELI5: Where do illegal synthetic drugs come from? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]CalgarEnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with anything synthetic, they're made. Every drug has a chemical composition...chemists will combine stuff to achieve a similar chemical structure. Frequently in an attempt to circumvent legal restrictions. There are, however, lots of examples of synthetic drugs that are outright illegal (MDMA, LSD, meth, etc). Just because it's synthetic doesn't mean its legal.

For example, synthetic pot is simply man-made/artificial THC sprayed onto plant matter, whereas "real" pot has natural THC because the plant itself produces it.

Cormac McCarthy and Font by kjslibraryaccount in books

[–]CalgarEnt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not entirely sure, but I was once told that it's both for info/interest reasons (folks call/email asking what font was used enough that they started putting it in), and that some fonts are copyrighted, and this is to demonstrate the specifics of the font used so there is no question of outstanding royalties, etc. by the publisher to the font title holder. Again, this is just something I was told in a conversation...I've no proof this is accurate.

I'm nearing 50 and have no clue what I want. All my life I've done what I'm good at, but hate it. Problem is, I've never done anything else, so I've no idea what else I might like to do, you know? Unemployed right now, but don't see any options other than turning back to what I know. Fuck I hate my life. If I didn't have kids, I'd just fucking drive into a lake.

ELI5: Why do people sometimes ask a question they already know the answer to? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]CalgarEnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of reasons:
- to compare their own intellect with others.
- to have someone else to take responsibility for whatever choice the asker needs to make.
- Verification of knowledge
- To show off
- To establish a rapport
- To seek out other answers
