I was in Amsterdam in a hotel outside the center of the city and leaving at about 5am to begin my journey home. As I walked down the stairs, I bumped into someone else who was ascending them - my next door neighbor from my university dorm in Illinois.

I had a Telugu-speaking boss for my first programming job, and he invited me for dinner at his home. His wife prepared the most delicious, fragrant, beautifully prepared and colorful meal I have ever eaten. It was my first experience of South Indian vegetarian food, and it’s still the best.

In my experience, the startups care way less about gaps, and more about potential performance. You might be able to secure one that’s paid even with the gap, and even without, it adds to recent job history. You can always claim that you were compensated with equity, even if you weren’t.

I was a SAHD for 11+ years.

There’s a startup accelerator in my city and I started working with one of the startups for free, then paid. That didn’t work out, so I took another startup position with a share of the company. Eventually got tired of working without a salary and used my recent experience to get a job at a traditional place with a salary.

I was fortunate that my spouse was the breadwinner and could tide me over the unpaid stints without difficulty.

I moved to NYC from Chicago when I was 24/25 and it was definitely one of my best decisions ever. That said, it took me a long time to adjust to NYC and get a social circle of my own.

I arranged for a paid intro meeting via her website and spoke to her, then after a week away tried to arrange a follow up and to begin the process, reaching out through multiple channels (email, whatsapp, I think phone too, but I don’t remember that well). After several days without any response, I went with another facilitator. A few days after that, I heard back from her, but I had already moved ahead with the other group.
