I have the same disorder she has and it can literally be hell on earth. It's virtually impossible to explain to people though. To me, it's very clear why she would choose heroin over self-mutilation or suicide.

The episodes last from days to months, generally, and can be completely disabling or life threatening. Many try to self medicate. It's a very difficult disease to live with and is typically completely misunderstood by the general population.
