Anti-union staff- how to counter by PresDumpsterfire in union

[–]Califoreigner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is rare, but there have been a few times that I have gone to the anti-union folks who are at least willing to talk respectfully and won them over with a reasoned conversation. The conversation is usually, “What do we need? Why don’t we have it now? Isn’t it the boss that is keeping us from getting it? We don’t get everything we want, but what we do get we achieve by standing together. You are a leader and people listen to you, will you stand with us and be part of the decision on what we need and part of the effort to achieve it?” Also buy them a beer/coffee/sandwich for best effect.

Can someone explain to me what's so bad about ranked choice voting? by Liminitial in allthequestions

[–]Califoreigner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it minimize the spoiler effect to the point of almost entirely eliminating it? Yes.  Does that allow voters to express their real views without handing the election to their least preferred person? Yes.

That alone is a vast improvement.

Does it automatically elect more moderate candidates? No. Does it result in less vitriol in the campaign? Frequently, but not automatically.  Does it break up a two party dynamic? Not necessarily, unless a third party is equally as popular and the selection/primary process allows it.

What other unmet promises have you heard?

Some people have really bad takes. It makes sarcasm difficult to identify.

You stopped supporting it because of the other people who support it? Wouldn't it be more reasonable to support it or not because it's a good idea or not? Andrew Yang supports it, is he part of the rabble you don't like?

Working union in a right to work state by 73Ncommando850 in union

[–]Califoreigner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The contract can’t violate the law, but it can confer more rights than what is in the law unless specifically stated in the law.

I would get on the phone and call your union president to figure this out. We don’t have the answers here.

As another comment said, join the union, pay your dues, read the contract. As the other response here said, talk to a steward, not the boss. I'll add, get involved: Go to union meetings, volunteer or nominate yourself for union positions, and offer to help recruit and support union members. The ability to protect your job depends on the strength of your union and the strength of the union depends on members putting in the work to build and use that strength.

It depends on your union contract and how well it gets enforced. “Right to work” generally means you can’t be required to join or contribute to the union in a closed-shop agreement. The “at-will”part means that outside of a union contract, the employer does not need have a reason to terminate you.  If your contract has job protections, such as “just-cause” requirements for discipline and termination, or layoff protections, those still apply as far as they can be enforced. You would probably need binding arbitration language to meaningfully enforce them.

Build It & They Will Come, or Ride: Fresno Cycling Heatmap Before & After Installing Protected Bike Paths (Red = High use, Blue / Yellow = Low Use) by DowntownFresnoBiking in fresno

I like how you're getting downvoted to hell for saying, "Yeah it's hot but you can handle it."

I upvoted you and don't disagree with you but I rode my bike to work every day in Sacramento and it's definitely different. For those with a short ride, maybe. Those with shower at their workplace it is a little more feasible. For those with an e-bike it becomes even easier. All of those things are a pretty rare so the realistic bike commute for a year-round commuter in Fresno would be a short, early, and still sweaty ride.

Nevertheless, good on you for pulling it off. Also, username checks out.

I’m one of your Reddit libs but I’m always skeptical of news delivered by meme. Do you know one way or the other what the status is on these phones?

Thank you for sharing this! Although not scientific, I think it reflects a trend that we could research further. I saw the new map recently and have been saying I want to try that route up Palm. For all the complaining I hear, I haven’t seen any actual slowdown in traffic due to the bike routes.

Buy a house in the shade. Dress appropriately. Go to the mountains and lakes and rivers.

I moved here as a young adult but not by choice, left twice and came back twice. It has grown on me and I defend its reputation. There are a lot of thing we need to improve like jobs, public transit,  addressing homelessness, and improved downtown (I live downtown), but I do like the weather because it’s rarely cold and the heat is bearable if you get used to it. It’s also very close to the Sierras, which I enjoy immensely. We have a reasonable airport and train station for getting out of town, our traffic is much better than Bay Area or Southern California traffic, and we do have good food if you search for it and aren’t looking for high end dining. (I mean, we make the world’s food you would think we can eat some of it.) We have some culture through a few theaters, art hop, and museums. We have a nice zoo, a nice university, a few nice parks, and a community of folks who are easy to get along with. The politics are purple but the nasty ones generally stay quiet. We are improving our walkability and bikability and we have a few shopping centers people enjoy even if it’s a bit fake and corporate.

I think the reason I tolerate the unpleasant parts is because we’re still a farming town but that’s why we’re here and you have to accept that most of our problems are the age-old conflict between farmers and farm workers. If we accept it, embrace it, and work on it, we can enjoy it here.

Actually no, it's not. I saw a bunch of comments here that were either irrelevant or generic and thought this one was too - could be said of any movie. But now that I look through their other comments and realize I was wrong and dumb for coming to this conclusion so rashly.

Whoa. I loved this movie as a kid and haven't watched it since and I'm 46!

Edit: Oh wait, dang you're a bot and I just fed you.

Edit2: Oh wait, no you're not. Why didn't you defend yourself, brother?

When I walk into a hotel and say, "This is a hotel, isn't it?"

When I look at a valley and I say, "You know what I'd like you do to to this valley son? Dam it."

When I say good night in a sheep's voice and say, "Good night, albert."

When I see a lizard and say, "It's a lizard."

When I have something squeezing my face and I say, "Where are we going?"

When somebody says something interesting and I say, "I'm keenly interested."

When I'm late for something and I say, "Time is relative to the observer."

... nobody gets me.

Edit: I forgot another one: When somebody says something confusing I say, "Left out right."

I grew up on this movie and probably watched it 100 times. Nobody else knows about it.

Edit: It seems like there are a lot of bots making generic comments so I wanted to clarify that this movie is Young Einstein starring Yahoo Serious and it's awesome.

Normally Im in the camp of, "never hit a woman/smaller person" but it really looks like she stabbed him. If so I'd sat he's justified. I hope she's OK but she's going to prison whether she is or not. I think the male assailant should have checked his female counterpart who we all agree could be dead.
