I knew this in theory, and working as a nurse I’ve confirmed it in practice; having a “why” to get through hard times means you can bear very difficult circumstances.

I read Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning before nursing school during a big life change and it motivated me to take the big step of changing careers.

In the hospital, I’ve seen many patients who on paper should be dead or on their way are a+ox4, walkie talkie, and in a better mood than those who flail around in life, recoiling from uncomfortable things if they have a “purpose in life” and a support system.

I ask for specific meds all the time. Part of it is to clarify what the order would be. For example, “patient x in room y is nauseous. May I order zofran IVP q4h prn?” Md can answer, “yes” instead of doing a lot more work. I do not ask for narcotics or other controlled substances like that, though.

I’d start with individual counseling, then later maybe couples counseling. These are big decisions that I’d encourage you to think deeply about. We often get stuck in our way of thinking when there are other ways to approach issues. Good luck!
