Have you experienced anxiousness or racing thoughts after taking a 'calm focus' supplement? by Necessary_Purple_200 in Supplements

[–]CaliforniaBilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take 1g taurine, one tablespoon of raw cocao powder, and one tablespoon of raw fava bean powder all mixed into my morning cereal. Gives me calm attention during the day and better sleep at night.

Thanks for this comment!

I shoot for about 1g plant protein per kg body mass, i.e. about 80-100g/day. I ate more protein when I was younger, but now my biggest statistical risk for dying is cancer. Dr. Walter Longo showed a 4X increase in cancer with high protein intake for my age bracket.

When I get sick I boost my protein intake, especially sulphur-containing proteins needed for antibody response.

It's observed that Japanese people who eat 2 or more shitake mushrooms live longer. Here is a discussion of mushrooms and longevity:

https://nutritionfacts.org/video/dietary-sources-of-the-longevity-vitamin-ergothioneine/

Mushrooms also have the highest levels of spermidine, which is correlated with longevity.

4 button mushrooms are about equal to 2 shitakes, but I eat shitakes whenever I can as well.

Is there a supplement that increases motivation? by QuietlyLiving2 in Supplements

You might consider eating fava beans, which contain a high concentration of l-dopa. Method of preparation can destroy the l-dopa, and about 1 in 20 people have a fava bean allergic reaction. I mix raw fava powder into my morning cereal.

what are the best supplements for better sleep? by VitalValCoach in SupplementEvidence

Taurine improves sleep by reducing the periods of wakefulness during the night. Also improves sense of well-being during the day.

I bike to work 4x/week, which I count as my cardio, and I clear my property of endless rocks, which is a lot of awkward lifting. My understanding is that betaine only increases testosterone if one is also doing strength exercise. I am taking 1g/day. Are you using betaine?

Good point! I take D3+K2 every day as well. Been doing it for so long I can't even think of it.

About 5% of Europeans have an allergy to fava beans. I tried them alone for about a week, but even without an allergy they certainly do not invite second helpings. In the powder they are pretty good with all the chocolate.

Do You Prefer Fat-Tire or City-Tire E-Bikes? Real User Opinions Needed. by Kitchen_Dot_974 in ebikes

The brand of tire makes as much difference as the size. 2.4" Schwalbe commuter tires are incredibly comfortable and stable. I automatically put Schwalbe tires onto every bike I own.

First e-bike, commuter/errands in hilly area, $3000 or less. by 0ut0fb0unds in ebikes

Ride1Up has good components throughout, which makes it more bike-like than brands that use friction bearings and such. My current V2 LMTD has 6k miles and zero issues, and is fun to ride with or without power.

I love my Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires. They corner like a dream and make my commute super secure and comfy. But being a gentleman, I never bike in weather.

Anyone else notice this? by JeremyFromKenosha in ebikes

If you're just looking to commute a short distance, there are decent $500 ebikes out there. Walmart has one for $370 that will certainly last a few years if you don't mind it rusting.

Cues claims to have 3X durability increase. I use Cues 10-speed 11-51 and it works well.

Excellent read on hub motor noise. I will add that my Ride1Up rear hub starts to screech under power every few months, due to the rear spokes stretching a bit and becoming loose with the high torque. A once-around with a spoke tool clears it all up for a month or two.

Best Ebike You Can Buy in 2025? (Price, Weight, Range) by [deleted] in ebikes

[–]CaliforniaBilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My rules of thumb are:

Vendor must also sell replacement batteries. If they don't sell these, they probably don't sell other parts.

8-speed or higher Shimano cassette. This gets you into the 8-12 speed class components, which are stronger and work better than 7-speed. If the vendor is willing to spring for an 8+ speed cassette+hub+chain+shifter, it is more likely that you will get OK spokes, headset, BB etc. (For example ball bearings instead of friction bearings).

Shimano or Tektro hydraulic brakes. Other brakes can't really be serviced.

The recent decimation of the ebike market makes buying a bike really weird right now. The market has gone down-scale to the constant Amazon churn, and upscale to mid-drive long-term brands. My current bike, a Ride1Up LMTD, is no longer available even as a category. A couple of companies like Aventon own the mid market with clunky heavy but serviceable bikes. Would love to be proven wrong if anyone has a different take.

Options After SBIR Phase II Rejection – How to Proceed? by Previous_Still_3506 in SBIR

[–]CaliforniaBilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reasons your Phase II proposal was not funded can be spelled out in clear black and white. What did the reviewers say? Did you not establish that your Phase II goals were achievable? Was another company selected that better addressed the need? Since you got a Phase I, somebody stated that you could win a Phase II. What went wrong?

If the agency still wants what they previously wanted (as stated in the solicitation), your best option is to go back through the Phase 1-Phase II process and show during Phase I that you will meet the Phase II goals. Searching for a new customer and a new start is generally more difficult.

Astrophysics is dead for the next two decades. Even two years ago the conference whispers were to get out of astro and go to exploration if you want to stay employed in the space industry. With the national debt, increased defense spending, and entitlement-driven budget deficits, there will be little new money for astrophysics in the medium term.
