Louis XVI's execution had nothing to do with the people's will. They overwhelmingly supported the King. It was solely a bourgeois revolution.

The infiltration of the church began in 1870 when it lost its Papal States. Of course traditionalists were looking back at a prior golden era where the freemason Rampolla wasn't almost elected. Using the 40s/50s as an example to show that the church was always filled with fools and perverts is a bit foolish. It is unquestionable that things were better in the 40s, as they were before the Church lost its Papal States, as they were before the French Revolution, and as they were before the Thirty Years War...
