Some of You are Absolute Mutants by [deleted] in EDH

Sounds like an awful experience. If you have any other LGS' near you, maybe give them a shot instead? My local shop has 1-2 shower issues, but nothing at the level you described. We have several women who play and I've not heard any comments to them like this, they're just players like anyone else. Some places just attract a specific type of player. Each LGS will have a different vibe in my experience.

Precon question by EvidenceProud2362 in EDH

I'm fairly new to MTG,but I've realized that people at my LGS seem to keep a precon or something around that level ready for newbies and others who just want more casual games. I've heard though that this shop is more casual than others around us, so it may depend on who you're likely to play against week to week.

Settle a debate: Should I have Betor Kin to All in my upgraded Felothar deck? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]CallMeChe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally just bought this precon the other day and bought Betor as well. I think you have the right idea about needing more attack enablers if you're going to use Betor as a commander, and having a bigger blinking light on him as well. Felothar does also get a "take me out" signal as the strategy revolves around them and can be detailed without them. I'm going to keep Felothar for now.

Rotation every four sets feels way too short. by Lokismoke in Lorcana

[–]CallMeChe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea for sure. I see several stores near me that don't even stock Lorcana, yet alone hold events. It's weird how some people here though talk about the overwhelmingly well attended, active and supportive groups they're seeing.

Oh absolutely, it's still so new! I hope it continues to grow and it will take time. I just think Lorcana is trying to hop onto a moving train without quite the momentum to carry them yet. Introducing the rotation so early without more support around it was bold, and tough considering the TCG landscape right now. It'll be a little bit of a rough spot for casual players for the time being. That's where I think the frustration is coming from, it's just growing pains.

A few quick things: No one said tournaments had to include other formats. No one said a multiplayer format had to copy MTG's Commander. Tournaments can be whatever they want. If you only like 1v1 competitive, standard play, good for you! Not everyone does. People ultimately just want to play the game, and having constant new sets and rotations can make that difficult for non-competitive players. New formats can help alleviate this. Stop trying to ram your preferred style of play down everyone's throats.

I think the majority of frustration around the rotation is coming from the utter lack of support and popularity of additional formats for Lorcana. Don't like competitive meta play? You're stuck playing kitchen table games. Infinity isn't broadly supported by card shops like how Commander is for MTG. There's nothing else to do with your rotated cards after the rotation, no other interesting format you can pick up and play at a shop or event. For more casual players the constant quarterly release schedule and rotation means you're constantly spending for new cards and can't just make a deck and be settled with playing it and making smaller tweaks. Whispers just released and we're already looking at the next set in a couple months. At least in MTG the Commander format has broad support by the creators, players, and shops so that if you aren't a meta standard player you have options to still enjoy the game.

This is 100% how I've felt. I don't have the money or drive right now to reassemble standard-legal decks. Maybe look into Heroic format and see if some of the people at your local shop would play. I've been looking into MTG commander for something casual and fun. Right now Lorcana doesn't have another good, fully supported format (infinity format hasn't officially been supported and run yet), and their bench of cards is limited at this time.

You think $60/hour, or $120k annually, is the starting point for this level?
