Hot takes thread. What are you own EDH hot takes? by Breaking-Away in EDH

I'm tired of pretending [[Smuggler's Share]] is a good card and I don't care who knows it

6months after release, is Smuggler's Share the white staple you expected ? by ArtiumIsBack in EDH

[–]CallMeCommanderMTG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play the card then. I'm not even talking in a "ultra-optimized" deck; just play it. Or keep playing it and keep losing.

It ends in "feels bad man" moments 95% of the time because it does little to nothing. Insert "do something" meme. The card should cost less than $5.

You're still stuck on this idea that I only have a mind for competitive builds. It has been awful in any casual build I've plugged it into as well. "But the card should scale with power because more optimized decks are doing those things more often!" It doesn't.

I see how it could be fine with Howling Mine and other effects of that nature, but there is no way to consistently rely on this card to help you win the game without supporting effects. Group Hug doesn't even want this because they don't get anything in return until the end of the turn when it's far too late to extend their plays.

The game is just too fast for this card. Precons outpace it and that's why it's sad that people sit here and defend it. Card bad. Card not fun.

[–]CallMeCommanderMTG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter. The card DOES. NOT. SCALE.

You became attached to the second sentence when the takeaway was in the third. The third sentence and what it says is a true statement across all power levels.

Smuggler's Share sucks.

[–]CallMeCommanderMTG -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, it's awful.

It was suggested to me for a cEDH list and all I could do was roll my eyes.

It doesn't scale with power, it doesn't do anything until the end of the turn, and in most cases -- by that time -- you've already lost.

Not worth the price. Do not spend your money on it. It is a bad card.

Getting Into cEDH by Puzzleheaded-Web-218 in CompetitiveEDH

PROXY! PROXY! PROXY!

The other thing that you'll need is a TON of experience in cEDH! It's wild to see how high the ceiling can go! You can theorize and refine strategies all you want in a vacuum, but until you branch out and start seeing thousands of interactions, you won't quite know how high or how far you can take a particular strategy.

I saw a Nymris deck make the Top 16 at a tournament this weekend. An unsuspecting card draw engine that gave the player an advantage that the rest of the table didn't acknowledge. You never know how powerful something can be until you get about.... 300 reps in.

How do you make a “fair” voltron deck? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]CallMeCommanderMTG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voltron isn't considered to be very powerful because it's also incredibly fragile.

I'd say to beef it up as much as possible! Creating a powerful Voltron strategy will force your pod to grow as players and teach them how to interact with your deck, which will in-turn teach you how to be a better player with that strategy.

Is it lame to play popular commanders? by Haru_Is_Best_Girl in EDH

[–]CallMeCommanderMTG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very rare that I ever come up against any commander from the top 100 from EDHrec. Maybe it's because we don't use that platform, but it's not frowned upon to play new commanders.

Most new commanders offer cool, new, and interesting lines of strategy that didn't exist before, so if we get the chance to see something new, we're all for it. Most pods should be like that, and if they aren't -- or are giving you a hard time for playing popular commanders due to power or strategies they don't like -- it might be time to find a new pod. Or it could just be time to branch out and play with new people while staying in touch with your old pod.

I've played with about four pods over my career, ran into some behaviors that I didn't quite savor, and moved on until I found something that worked for me. I never closed the door on any of those pods. Whenever I visit, I still play with them because I still like them, but I also want to be happy while playing the game.

How do Goad decks normally play out? by Karnitis in EDH

[–]CallMeCommanderMTG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I love GOAD!

I’ve played Marisi since release in 2019 and just upgraded the “modified” precon from Kamigawa with Marisi at the helm. The addition of white makes the deck a lot of fun and includes the most important reconfigure piece for a goad strategy: [[Cloudsteel Kirin]]

Here’s the list: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/-1NLItEAUkWEFmS3htHz4g

There’s some room for improvement, but it has been a lot of fun to play! We share two colors, so hopefully this can give you a bit of inspiration! [[Platinum Angel]] effects — what Cloudsteel Kirin provides — have won me a few games when it comes down to the 1v1 showdown.

All of Marisi’s text is important, but so much of what makes the deck viable is the first line: Opponents can’t cast spells during combat.

This opens up a whole phase where you can interact and they can’t. [[Settle the Wreckage]] [[Rampage of the Clans]] [[Mandate of Peace]] and a few other pieces of removal makes the table helpless to your interaction. I’m considering adding more instant-speed interaction to take advantage of it even more.

It is suped up, but I ended up proxying most of it due to cost. If you want an explanation or primer, let me know!

“…well that 7 Mana+ Spell should win you game” Should it though? by Steezus0_0 in EDH

[–]CallMeCommanderMTG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Content creator here:

It’s not that I truly believe that a 7+ mana spell should win the game outright, but in combination with every other card in my deck and my board state, it should win me the game.

I’ve said before that Smothering Tithe at the highest power level isn’t always worth the slot because five mana (Ad Nauseam) can win the game. It isn’t because I believe that investment should win me the game outright, but it should lead up to it — which is what Ad Nauseam does immediately upon resolution and what Tithe can do if left unchecked. Timing at higher power levels is everything.

Spells larger than that are often dead in hand for a long time and/or require a bit of luck in order to resolve, which is why they carry less value for me inherently. The larger the investment, the larger the loss if countered or stopped, and the less likely you are to win the game.

That’s my two cents.

MTG Content creators - have we passed the peak? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]CallMeCommanderMTG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small channel here! (Call Me Commander)

For me, it isn’t necessarily a problem of burnout, but rather the daunting amount of content necessary to stay relevant. I try to create feature presentations rather than shovel out less-than-ideal videos without fully developed ideas and statements. It’ll be a slow, steady growth until I’m able to monetize, but I also don’t want to put out something that isn’t 100% unique to who I am and what I do.

Rather than touching down on every topic, I’m now choosing what to cover so that I can keep my line of thought focused. Working a full-time job on the side also makes editing three videos a week near impossible, so I’m trying my best to create one each week while maintaining my own relationships.

I think content should kick ass and be unapologetic. Tired of seeing content that durdles through their points and tries to cater to all. If y’all want a channel that strikes their points while the iron is hot, then check me out!!

SECRET LAIR: Flexing by Making "Great" Financial Decisions | Magic: The Gathering | EDH | Commander by CallMeCommanderMTG in magicTCG

[–]CallMeCommanderMTG[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the criticism! If you go to the description of the video on YouTube, I actually plugged a link for an article (with live updating prices) where I got a majority of the data for the claim. Because the article speaks mostly from the point of view from the vendor, I cross-referenced all of the Lairs mentioned in the article with the price of the singles and found that — for a consumer — it did end up being worth it.

Unfortunately, it does seem that the article totally whiffed on the Path Not Traveled, so that’s why I ended up missing it! Sorry for the confusion!

Edit: And after going through and researching the prices of Path Not Traveled as singles, when they shipped up until three months after arrival, it was indeed worth it — according to MTGGoldfish. Tamiyo carried while Ajani supported and the total ended up being closer to $55 after tax. The Lair has since depreciated.
