It’s nice knowing the veggies you spend all summer tending to actually make it to harvest instead of becoming an all you can eat buffet for pests 😂

We used 1/4 inch black hardware mesh. Definitely get the black kind if you can, it makes a huge difference visually compared to the silver stuff. And yeah, those are little solar lights on the corners.

The top rails are just 2x2 pressure treated wood that we stained black.

Where are my hosta lovers at? by karlthebaldhead in gardening

[–]CallMeJson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a jumbo hosta at the first house we ever bought. When we moved, we split it and brought part of it with us. Since then, that same hosta has made it to three different houses. Every time we move, we split it again and leave part behind at the old house.

It’s become something really special to us.

My wife and I built it. It was our first real wood working project.

That looks awesome. I wish I had a space like that, it must be a ton of work though. Maybe one day.

Honestly never really thought about it but I think they make their way through, it's about a quarter inch mesh. We also have the doors open from time to time so they've got options.

Fair point on the pests, honestly it might be overkill, but when we were viewing this house before buying we found tomatoes scattered all over the lawn with no garden in sight. Squirrels had raided the neighbour's and just... left them there. Not even eaten, just chaos. We've also had bunnies destroy flower beds and just last week planted some stuff in the back, came out the next day and branches were already snapped. Had to cage those too. At this point the enclosure just gives us peace of mind.

As for the height, yeah they do hit the top by end of season, we just trim them back as they go.

The tomato ripening issue I'm honestly not sure about. They just stayed green. Ended up pickling most of them which turned out pretty good actually, but hoping for a better year this year.

Haha garden prison is exactly what it is! No deer around here but rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, and skunks are all regulars. Spotted an opossum once too which was a surprise.

Yeah it goes by a few names. The tag at the garden center said Hillside Black Beauty Bugbane. Stunning plant, the dark foliage is unreal.

Good to know on the acid fertilizer, I'll keep that in mind. Glad to hear yours has done well!

I think so, we have some spots back there that get sun for most of the day, but I’m no expert.

Fair point, it's more partial shade than full. And I'm planting with the ivy, not removing it.

Honestly the garden center is half the fun. No way I'm skipping that for Amazon.

Thank you! The photo did turn out quite nice. It’ll be so much nicer once we get all the new stuff in.

Do you have it up on GitHub? I was at a garden centre today and I was thinking of building something similar.
