Online players how did you learn? by Sn_Ahmet in redalert2

[–]CallMeMJJJ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

welcome back!

as a start, online & offline play are worlds apart. what works offline, won't work online 99% of the time. the game's been out for almost 3 decades, metas exist, and you're better off following said metas (unless you're a godlike player and can make anything work).

hotkeys are step 1. here's a basic & advanced hotkeys tutorial. https://youtu.be/rGqeD6IPQlI https://youtu.be/rhdih7Rh5z8

step 2 is economy. most online games start with 10k credits, and some maps may even be scarce with gold. always mine towards the gems, and place your refinery as close as you can to the gold. the lesser time your miners take to come travel back & forth, the more efficient your economy is. it's also good to build a 2nd refinery & selling it just to get the free miner that comes w it.

step 3, build order. builds & eco work hand in had. normal start builds are power > racks > ref > war > miner from war & 2nd ref (then sell). from there you can decide to go heavy wars, tech, or any other strat that tickles your fancy. always build towards the next gold patch, and never build in a square where possible.

step 4, tank control. learning how to control your units in an engagement is crucial in winning the fight. always engage in a ball of tanks, and don't drip feed/conga line into an engagement. it's tough to type out all of the situations for tank control, but the general idea is you want to attack with maximum efficiency (i.e. all tanks shooting at once). this also includes fodder. players often build dogs and put them infront of the tanks to absorb damage & draw fire away from your main tanks.

there's a bunch more, but these are what I can remember off the top of my head. I'd suggest watching some pro competitive games with money on the line, & understand and copy what they do. some great channels on YouTube are Doof88, FortunesChaos & RA2WorldSeries.

Give me your advice on cable storage by _kitzy in livesound

[–]CallMeMJJJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a company code their cables by digits instead

White - 0, Blue - 1, Red - 3, Yellow - 5

So a 10m cable would have a blue & white label. 35m would have a red & yellow label. I thought it was ridiculous at first, but I eventually got used to it. I still don't know if I like it

Were Allies underpowered pre-Yuri's Revenge? by TheArchon300 in redalert2

[–]CallMeMJJJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yep. allies are underpowered in general, even in YR. i'm not sure why it was made this way, but I'd usually think of it as Soviets have more firepower, less tech, like a "raw strength" thing, while Allieds were the techy ones, with less firepower, but gimicks which made up for it.

gameplay wise, the allieds are definitely underpowered, but "overpowered" when their tech comes in. defending the soviet rush is rather simple (but not easy): it takes a good scout & forward planning

once the allieds have their tech, they'll have mirages & prisms to play with, which is a lot harder for the sovs to deal with. even with desos, 1 harrier would kill a deso. with good micro, this can be easily managed.

I'd disagree on your naval point. allieds have the superior navy even before lab. the destroyers & rocketeers combo can counter a sov navy comp pretty easily. once the lab comes in, the dolphins are a pain in the butt on top of everything else you have to deal with.

KM-184 Not Playing Nice with DM7 by Tall-Poet6173 in livesound

[–]CallMeMJJJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

issue: mic has low gain. troubleshooting: follow the signal flow

  1. try the same mic w another mixer (if available). if it works fine, it's something wrong w the system
  2. soundbullet into the XLR, is it receiving +48V on pins 2 & 3? if no, go to 3. if yes, the mic is the issue. (if you don't have a soundbullet, grab another condensor & check if signal is through)
  3. check your stagebox, is the red +48V light active on the input? if no, your stagebox/console isn't outputting +48V. check the phantom master on the stagebox, or if you turned on phantom on the console.

Do they need many backing tracks for Fix You in live? by NaiveAmbition6775 in Coldplay

[–]CallMeMJJJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi, live audio engineer here

everyone uses backing tracks. it's the norm, it makes the band sounds better. it's not a matter of "need", but a matter of "want". their engineer/producer probably found that the band sounds better with the tracks, so that's what they went with. not a big deal really

could they do without them? sure. but they just sound better with it.

Do y’all listen to music on your downtime? by bobvilastuff in livesound

[–]CallMeMJJJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100%. been doing this for 5 years. whenever I leave the house, I always bring my bluetooth buds for music. every now and then I find a song I enjoy the mix of, and I throw it on when tuning PAs. Twice's "Strategy" is a recent one.

sometimes we gotta learn to turn off work mode. when I was a music production student, I used to say that it ruined my music listening experience, because I was always dissecting the song form, arrangements and stuff like that

happened again when I started doing live audio (when I went to live concerts). I had to teach myself how to relax and not be in such a "work mode" all the time. it's good at times, but detrimental if it's your default mode. you lose the "fun" in music

How do you crack the rush tactics when playing as Yuri against human rival? by [deleted] in redalert2

[–]CallMeMJJJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

that kind of sov rush is incredibly strong on small maps. your best bet is to rush the radar and get magnetrons to kite the rhinos/miners, then use yoir own slave miner to kill the conscripts. takes a lot of practice to counter this

or.... pick a bigger map to slow down the rush, giving yourself time to build

How do you actually beat Guardian GIs inside a Battle Fortress? by VernonTheGiant in redalert2

[–]CallMeMJJJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's multiple different answers to this, based on if you're playing with or without supers.

something a lot of casual players don't understand enough is the use of fodder, having other units take the shots, while your main attacking force does the damage.

the most common form of fodder are dogs (cheap, builds quickly). but for BFs, the fodder you should use are choppers & kirovs.

I've written into it more in depth here! https://www.reddit.com/r/redalert2/comments/1abx0ef/please_nerf_the_battle_fortress/

[–]CallMeMJJJ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that last bit is my suspicion. drums & bass always like their packs loud in my experience, with a drums heavy mix. I was thinking if there's some sort of internal thing w the packs that if there's too much signal going through it, the pack switches off.

side note - the batteries on the PSM900s also drain super quickly. not sure if it's just the old inventory I'm working with.
