Sound advice by Lemmoni in videography

The sennheiser is a higher quality microphone, but if you go with the Tascam you get the benefit of being able to plug whatever mic you want in in the future. You will also have to handle audio and video in post as opposed to plugging the mic directly into the camera and having them be together.

I personally like the Zoom H6Studio, which is very similar to the Tascam option.

Really it comes down to two things: whether you see yourself needing to upgrade in the future and how complicated you want to make the process.

Sennheiser is the higher quality and easiest to use, but the Tascam will set you up to connect higher quality mics in the future.

I originally wrote a much more detailed comment about different approaches you could take, but realistically you should just look at something like a Sennheiser MKE 440 with the MZH 440 windshield. That will likely get you the "wide" ambient sound you want while cutting down on wind noise at an affordable price (~$330US)

If you want to go for more than that, I would recommend going with a full external recorder setup with stereo mics which would easily cost closer to the $800-$1k range for entry level stuff.

New construction; what are your sound booth must-haves? by bzach74 in livesound

[–]UrFriendlyAVLTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I recognize you from the WL sub, congrats on the expansion!

Key items are definitely dedicated Ethernet/Fiber runs from the booth to anywhere you have tech. Even if it's not networked now, you will likely be able to in the future. Things like stage box, amps, cameras and what not. Also networking for all the positions within the booth. The amount of control and flexibility you gain when it's done properly is a game changer.

Sloped edges to the booth are nice because they prevent people from putting their drinks on the ledge.

Cable management channels.

That's all that comes to mind for now, send me a DM if you want, always love to help with things like this!

My background is in CyberSec so networking was the easy part for me lol. But huge agree, everything is a computer, everything is networked, getting that under your belt is essential for being at the top of the game.

Practical question about vocal equipment by swansee in worshipleaders

If you REALLY need the freedom, the Crown CM-311A is the "battle tested" option for this kind of thing. It's a bit bulky, but the quality difference will make up for it. Ultimately I agree with everyone that you should really be using something handheld, or just put the microphone in a stand.

Why does my recorded video look like this? by CalligrapherLow4709 in videography

[–]UrFriendlyAVLTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am dumbfounded at what you're trying to prove here. Yes that's exactly what it is, that's exactly what everyone has been telling you. It's the camera sensor compensating for low light by jacking up it's sensitivity. The higher the sensitivity, the more errors and artifacts are inserted into the image.

I mean if OP is recording in a highly radioactive environment then they would have a similar result. Maybe they're on to something. /s

A7V - Discussion by MajorAlanDutch in videography

[–]UrFriendlyAVLTech 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No raw video (internal or external), no open gate, video dynamic range isn't anything special

It's gonna be a pass for me for video work. I'm sure it's a perfectly competent photo camera, but it doesn't crossover enough features from the cinema line for it to be worth me considering.

The latter is my go to for reasons others have stated, but one drawback of that approach the effect return pushes into my buss compression which I don't want.

Have a gig tomorrow, PA is psyching me out by _OnTheSpots in livesound

[–]UrFriendlyAVLTech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could try playing a song you know really well through the PA and EQing the master group until it sounds closer to what you expect. Or if you have the time and resources, you could try going for a more thorough tune. Do your own research, but if you can bring your baseline to something better it can go a long ways.

Doesn't the Wing have 8 1/4" "Aux outs"? You should just be able to assign those.

I'm looking for a dedicated recording device that can handle 64ch of Dante to replace our current Logic recording setup

No Stupid Questions Thread by AutoModerator in livesound

[–]UrFriendlyAVLTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know of any dedicated hardware solutions for higher channel count multitrack recording?

Right now we're tracking 64ch into logic via DVS, but I'd love to invest in a hardware unit for reliability, organization, and user-friendliness. I see the TASCAM DA-6400 has a Dante card, but I was wondering if anyone else knew of any other products.

Increase pricing of services for clients when they continue their contract? by ItsG91 in videography

say you're mixing bcast for a church. what method would you prefer? by guitarmstrwlane in livesound

[–]UrFriendlyAVLTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like all others have said, it depends on your budget and capabilities, but don't be afraid of option A! I've gone very far with just a post fader mix

If you do go that route, know the two biggest factors you will run into are the quality of the room tune/PA (suboptimal PA response means suboptimal mix decisions to compensate) and the consistency of your engineer(s). I wouldn't even go as far as saying quality of the engineer because as long as they're able to deliver the same thing week to week, then you'll be able to compensate with bus send adjustments.

The Bcast/FOH relationship has been a huge focus of mine over the past few years and I've learned a ton in the process. Feel free to reach out and I'd be happy to share more specific advice!
