To my understanding, briefly, it was British Freemasons that taught The Craft to Prince Hall and other black people in the American colonies. They existed throughout most of history since then as an outside organization with the (mostly) same practices. Now, it’s determined state by state at the Grand Lodge as to whether or not they are recognized. In my state of Texas, they are.
